Ready to launch your veterinary career with a supportive team that actually invests in your development? Abbey Vet Centre offers structured mentorship, modern facilities, and a friendly culture where learning never stops.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Saturday rota: 1 in 5 Saturdays, 8am–2pm (not overnight out-of-hours). No night shifts or overnight on-call mentioned.

About the Role

This is your chance to step into practice with genuine support from experienced vets who understand what new graduates need. You’ll work across two small animal sites located in Durham, enjoying quick access to major cities in the UK including Newcastle, London, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool via excellent transport links. The role offers a manageable schedule: 40 hours per week across four 10-hour shifts (Monday–Friday), plus one Saturday per month (8am–2pm) on a 1:5 rota—designed to give you work-life balance as you build your confidence.

The practice is a genuine team of 10 vets, 13 nurses, and 4 VCAs, with several certificate holders in dental, medicine, and soft tissue surgery. Your supervising vets include a lead surgeon with a real passion for teaching and development, supported by colleagues with 15+ years’ experience. The atmosphere is welcoming and collaborative, giving you space to learn without the pressure of isolation.

Facilities are well-equipped: digital and dental x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, K-laser, and more—with a TTA/TPLO kit coming soon. You’ll see a genuine breadth of small animal cases in a supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide first-opinion small animal veterinary care across both Durham and Chester Le Street sites
  • Work under supervision from senior vets and the practice director, building clinical competence gradually
  • Participate in the practice’s daily caseload: consultations, diagnostics, and surgical support
  • Engage with the Graduate Academy mentorship programme, including structured learning and CPD
  • Contribute to Saturday rota work (1:5 frequency) alongside your weekday schedule

Requirements

  • Recently qualified veterinary surgeon (or close to RCVS registration)
  • Full driving licence (for travel between the two sites)
  • Enthusiasm to learn and willingness to ask for help when needed
  • Professional approach to client communication and animal welfare

Benefits

  • Salary & Progression: Competitive starting salary of £36,000 per annum, with salary increase in year 2
  • Time Off: 6.6 weeks holiday plus your birthday off each year
  • Learning & Development: £1,250 annual CPD allowance; access to the IVC Evidensia Research Fund; blended learning programme; dedicated graduate mentor
  • Financial Security: Company pension scheme with IVC contribution; no financial tie-in
  • Wellbeing & Support: £1,250 annual Care Fund for personal wellbeing; 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme; private medical insurance
  • Perks: Discounted pet care at IVC practices; retail discounts and cashback; Cycle to Work and Green Car schemes
  • Professional Support: Paid RCVS membership and other professional fees covered
  • Community: Access to a global network of veterinary professionals and career opportunities across IVC Evidensia practices
