Love working with animals and people? Join a friendly, supportive four-practice group where your flexibility and positive attitude matter more than experience—comprehensive training provided.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Weekend and bank-holiday shifts on rota; specific rota frequency not detailed.

About the Role

This is a fantastic opportunity to join Abivale Veterinary Group, a four-practice operation serving the Oxfordshire area. You’ll provide reception cover across surgeries in Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford, and Wantage, making this a varied role where no two days are quite the same. Working 16 hours per week across a mix of morning and evening shifts (7:30 am–7:30 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, plus weekend and bank-holiday rota work), you’ll need a clean driving licence and own transport to move between sites as required. Veterinary experience is ideal but not essential—what matters is a genuinely flexible attitude and a willingness to learn.

You’ll be the welcoming face of the practice, managing the front desk, handling pharmacy duties, booking appointments, and keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes. There’s variety in this role: from client interactions to stock control, insurance processing, and administrative support for the clinical team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome clients and pets in a professional, friendly manner and manage the front-of-house experience
  • Handle reception duties including appointment booking, client registration, and explaining practice services
  • Process prescriptions, dispense medications, and manage pharmacy stock control
  • Enter accurate patient information onto record systems promptly
  • Prepare paperwork for veterinary staff and assist vets and nurses as needed
  • Manage payments, process daily banking, and handle insurance form submissions
  • Maintain clean, stocked consulting rooms, waiting areas, and offices across all four sites
  • Place product orders according to protocol and manage stock levels
  • Handle client queries and complaints with empathy and professionalism
  • Some lone working/sole charge shifts
  • Attend training events to maintain role-specific knowledge

Requirements

  • Clean, current UK driving licence and own car (essential—you’ll be covering multiple sites)
  • Comfortable with lone working and a busy environment
  • Good IT skills including Excel, Outlook, and social media familiarity
  • Confident animal-handling skills
  • Ability to stay calm, helpful, and empathetic during peak times
  • Strong sense of initiative and energy
  • Veterinary experience desirable but not essential—training is provided

Benefits

  • Competitive salary up to £10,612 DOE (based on 16 hours/week pro rata)
  • 6.6 weeks annual leave
  • Additional annual leave on your birthday
  • Enhanced family-friendly policies including maternity, paternity, adoption, and shared parental pay
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Employee wellbeing initiatives
  • Non-accidental injury support
  • Learning and development via the IVC Evidensia Academy
  • Pawsome Benefits reward gateway with discounts and cashback at 100+ retailers
  • Pension scheme
  • Discounted staff pet care

About the Practice

Abivale Veterinary Group is part of Independent Vet Care (IVC Evidensia), a large UK veterinary group. The four-practice network spans Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford, and Wantage, treating dogs, cats, small pets, and exotics including rabbits and chickens. The practices are known for creating a supportive, friendly working environment where professional growth and personal goals are actively encouraged.

As part of IVC Evidensia, you’ll have access to robust career development opportunities, employee wellbeing support, and a culture that values both clinical excellence and staff wellbeing.
