About the Role

This is a permanent position in a well-established small animal hospital and emergency service clinic, where you’ll have access to cutting-edge diagnostic and surgical technology while being mentored by an experienced clinical team. The hospital operates 24/7, but the practice is genuinely flexible on rota patterns: full-time, part-time, or weekend-only options are all available—you just need to commit to the weekend rota (either 1:2 for full-time, 1:4 for part-time, or weekends only).

Founded in 2002, Barnsley Vets for Pets has evolved into a centre of excellence recognised by the RCVS for outstanding care. You’ll work alongside 15 veterinary surgeons (including their dedicated OOH team), 24 RVNs, and a broader clinical support team, meaning you’re never isolated and always have senior colleagues to discuss cases with.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle a diverse caseload across first-opinion and referral cases within the same hospital setting
  • Collaborate with the 15-strong veterinary team and 24 RVNs on complex and interesting cases
  • Participate in the weekend rota system as agreed (full-time, part-time, or weekend-only)
  • Engage with specialist services offered by the practice, including neurosurgery, orthopaedics, minimally invasive surgery, stem cell therapy, and chemotherapy
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous learning and professional development

Requirements

  • Qualified veterinary surgeon (RCVS registered)
  • Confident handling of routine surgical and medical cases
  • Keen interest in managing diverse caseloads to a high diagnostic and treatment standard
  • Commitment to excellent client service and collaborative teamwork
  • Flexibility to join the weekend rota (details negotiable based on your preference)
  • Willingness to pursue professional development—new graduates and experienced vets seeking certificate qualifications are equally welcome

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Generous CPD allowance to support professional development and specialist qualifications
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Paid memberships: RCVS, BVA, and VDS
  • Access to advanced medical technology: CT scanner, rigid and flexible endoscopes, ultrasound machines
  • Mentorship and support from an experienced 15-strong clinical team
