About the Role

Bristol Vet Specialists is seeking experienced veterinary surgeons to strengthen its medicine department. Two full-time positions at four days per week are available, created following the departure of two long-standing specialists. You’ll join an experienced, cohesive team in a purposeful referral-only setting where internal medicine takes centre stage.

The role involves managing a busy hospital caseload, contributing to the training of residents and interns, and participating in on-call rota support for the medicine service. You’ll have access to comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, and the practice actively supports research initiatives with funding opportunities available through CVS Research Grants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist-level internal medicine care to referred cases in a busy tertiary referral setting
  • Manage complex diagnostic and treatment protocols using the hospital’s advanced diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, fluoroscopy) and laboratory facilities
  • Mentor and train medicine residents and interns, supporting their professional development
  • Participate in the on-call rota system supporting the medicine department out-of-hours
  • Contribute to clinical research activities; applications for research funding are actively encouraged and supported
  • Work collaboratively with specialists in other disciplines (cardiology, neurology, oncology, surgery, dentistry, anaesthesia) within the integrated referral centre

Requirements

  • European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM) board certification or equivalent ACVIM diplomate status
  • ECVIM or ACVIM board-eligible candidates will also be considered
  • Proven experience managing busy hospital caseloads in a referral or emergency setting
  • Experience in mentoring and training residents and/or interns
  • Full UK veterinary registration or eligibility to register with the RCVS
  • Willingness to participate in on-call duties as part of the rota system

About the Practice

Bristol Vet Specialists (BVS) is a large, purpose-built specialist referral hospital located in Bristol and part of CVS Group. The practice offers the full complement of specialist veterinary services including anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, and clinical nutrition support. The medicine department is particularly strong, comprising three boarded specialists (two ECVIM and one ACVIM), two medicine residents, one medicine intern, four discipline-specific nursing staff, and a patient care assistant. The hospital environment is modern, well-resourced, and designed for collaborative, multi-disciplinary care. The practice actively promotes research engagement and maintains a successful rotating internship programme.
