About the Role

You’ll be joining a brand-new specialist referral centre in Avonmouth as an Anaesthesia-Focused Registered Veterinary Nurse. This is your opportunity to deepen your expertise in anaesthesia while working in a multidisciplinary hospital environment that values nurse-led practice and continuous learning. The role offers 4 days per week (10-hour shifts) with a consistent day off, giving you genuine work-life balance in a demanding specialist setting.

You’ll monitor and manage general anaesthesia and sedation across diverse surgical and imaging cases—from soft tissue and orthopaedics to cardiology, ophthalmology, neurology, radiotherapy, and dentistry. The team actively encourages nurse-led procedures such as arterial catheterisation and regional techniques, plus you’ll participate in weekly journal clubs and book clubs to stay at the cutting edge of your specialism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and monitor general anaesthesia and sedation for cases across soft tissue, orthopaedics, cardiology, ophthalmology, neurology, radiotherapy, and dentistry
  • Manage patient recovery on the dedicated recovery ward, ensuring high standards of post-operative care
  • Perform nurse-led procedures including arterial catheterisation and local regional anaesthetic techniques
  • Support the multidisciplinary team of nurses and specialist veterinary surgeons in delivering best-practice patient care
  • Participate in professional development through weekly journal clubs and book clubs
  • Contribute to on-call rotas (currently 1:11, guaranteed never more than 1:4) on weekdays, weekends, and bank holidays

Requirements

  • Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) status with RCVS
  • Minimum one year post-qualification experience (referral nursing experience beneficial but not essential)
  • Demonstrated interest in or experience with anaesthesia
  • Strong initiative, forward-thinking approach, and exemplary teamwork
  • Compassionate and enthusiastic approach to patient care
