About the Role

This is a full-time permanent position for an experienced or newly qualified Veterinary Surgeon with a strong surgical focus. You’ll be joining Calder Vets Dewsbury Hospital, a purpose-built primary care and referral facility in West Yorkshire, as part of a dynamic team that thrives on clinical engagement and professional growth. With no out-of-hours night duties (the practice has a dedicated, on-site night team), you’ll focus on high-quality daytime surgery and primary care, though some weekend day work is required.

Based at the Dewsbury hospital, you’ll work in a modern facility equipped with fully stocked theatres, CT imaging, ultrasound, X-ray, and a dedicated dental suite. The practice runs 15-minute consultation slots as standard, giving you space to deliver thorough, unhurried care. You’ll be part of a large veterinary team supported by exceptional nursing and front-of-house staff, many of whom are pursuing surgical certificates or advanced practitioner credentials themselves.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide primary care consultations and clinical assessment across small animal cases
  • Perform routine and non-routine surgical procedures, with scope to advance into soft tissue, orthopaedic, laparoscopic, and endoscopic work
  • Contribute to the practice’s referral work, including intermediate-tier referrals seen on-site
  • Participate in clinical case discussions and knowledge-sharing with colleagues
  • Deliver preventative healthcare, dentistry, and imaging interpretation
  • Support the team’s commitment to clinical excellence and Cat-Friendly standards (Silver accreditation)
  • Contribute to weekend day rota as required

Requirements

  • Veterinary degree registrable in the UK with full MRCVS status
  • Surgical Certificate or currently working towards one (desirable but not essential)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong team ethos and collaborative approach to practice
  • Can-do attitude, determination, and positivity
  • Organisational skills and ability to manage a varied caseload

Benefits

  • Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum (dependent on experience), plus welcome bonus available
  • 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays, plus additional birthday leave
  • RCVS and VDS fees fully paid
  • CPD allowance of 4 days per year to attend external events, plus access to comprehensive Linnaeus online CPD programme (including certificate-holder level courses)
  • Career progression opportunities with support for professional qualifications
  • Staff discount schemes
  • Life assurance and enhanced sickness pay
  • Enhanced equal family leave
  • E-car salary sacrifice scheme and cycle-to-work scheme
  • Wellness programme including employee assistance programme, eyecare vouchers, free annual flu jab, and on-site mental health advisors
  • Recruitment referral reward scheme
