About the Role

This is a full-time position within the Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) team at Dick White Veterinary Specialists, one of Europe’s largest multi-disciplinary veterinary referral centres. You’ll work 40 hours per week on a rota basis (5 × 8-hour shifts Monday to Friday, plus a 1:4 weekend rota with TOIL), delivering high-standard nursing care to emergency and critically ill patients in a state-of-the-art ICU and Emergency Room.

Based in Newmarket, Cambridge, this role is ideal if you’re passionate about working in a fast-paced referral environment and keen to develop your ECC nursing expertise. You’ll work alongside ECC specialists and experienced nursing colleagues, with limited client-facing responsibilities and strong emphasis on clinical learning and professional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for hospitalised inpatients, including critical care and infectious patients
  • Perform urgent triage and assist with emergency stabilisation procedures
  • Administer treatments, medications, and calculate CRIs as prescribed
  • Place and maintain intravenous, urinary, central venous, PICC lines, feeding tubes, and chest drains
  • Monitor patients under sedation and anaesthesia, including post-operative recovery
  • Provide pre- and post-operative nursing care with accurate clinical and hospitalisation record-keeping
  • Participate in ICU rounds, team meetings, and clinical briefings
  • Maintain stock management, equipment maintenance, and diagnostic/sterilisation equipment in line with SOPs
  • Support and mentor PCAs, SVNs, and colleagues as required
  • Uphold high standards of hygiene, infection control, and Health & Safety compliance
  • Undertake CPD and required in-house training
  • Assist other departments as needed based on patient and business requirements

Requirements

  • Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) qualification
  • Previous Emergency or ER veterinary nursing experience
  • IT literacy and proficiency
  • Strong organisational skills, time management, and multitasking ability
  • Confident and effective communication skills
  • Excellent all-round nursing expertise and patient care focus
  • Proactive, enthusiastic, and collaborative team player

Desirable Experience & Qualifications

  • Referral nursing experience
  • ECC nursing experience
  • Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Dip AVN ECC)
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist qualification
