About the Role

You’ll be joining Hawick Veterinary Practice as a Mixed Veterinary Surgeon, working with a varied and interesting caseload across small animals (60%), large animals (30%), and equines (10%). With 25 hours over three days, including evening surgeries finishing at 6pm and a manageable 1:5 weekend rota plus one night on-call per week (with on-call support available if needed), you’ll have genuine scope to protect your personal time. The practice sits in the charming Scottish Borders town of Hawick, with easy access to Edinburgh, Carlisle, and Newcastle within an hour’s drive—perfect for those seeking excellent work-life balance without sacrificing career development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical care across mixed practice caseload: small animal, large animal, and equine patients
  • Lead or contribute to clinical areas based on your interests and expertise
  • Manage evening surgeries (finishing at 6pm)
  • Participate in 1:5 weekend rota with Monday off in compensation
  • Provide one night on-call per week (support available as needed)
  • Engage with long-standing client relationships in a rural practice setting
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and clinical excellence

Requirements

  • Qualified veterinary surgeon (MRCVS or equivalent)
  • Experience working in mixed or multi-species practice (experience level not specified, but mixed practice background valued)
  • Willingness to work across small animal, large animal, and equine cases
  • Interest in developing special interests or clinical expertise
  • Valid RCVS registration

About the Practice

Hawick Veterinary Practice is a long-established, purpose-built, RCVS-accredited mixed practice located in the beautiful Scottish Borders. The practice is RCVS PSS Core standard (aiming for GP accreditation) and holds an ISFM Gold award and Bronze Investors in the Environment (iiE) Sustainability award. Joined Linnaeus in 2018, the practice has benefited from significant recent investment in facilities and equipment.

The team is well-equipped with multiparameter monitoring for anaesthesia, ‘Bair’ hugger warming systems, ultrasound, X-ray, and dental X-ray.
