7 nights on / 14 nights off rota. Dedicated night veterinary nurse role providing out-of-hours emergency cover to Medivet Skeldale and local referral clinics.

About the Role

Medivet Skeldale Veterinary 24-hour Hospital in Thirsk is a thriving emergency and referral centre set in beautiful North Yorkshire, with a heritage like no other—this is the original home of James Herriot. You’ll be joining a large, purpose-built practice with a history of client-focused excellence and a genuine commitment to exceptional care.

This night nursing position offers a rare gift: genuine work-life balance. Working a 7-nights-on/14-nights-off rota, you’ll provide emergency out-of-hours cover to the hospital and local referral clinics alongside a dedicated Night Veterinary Surgeon. The high surgical and medical caseload means no two shifts are the same, giving you the chance to fully develop your nursing skills in a busy, well-equipped environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver exceptional patient and client care throughout your night shifts
  • Support surgical and medical procedures, managing all pre- and post-procedure activities
  • Conduct nurse-led consultations and schedule 3 activities
  • Monitor and manage patient care during emergency presentations
  • Manage patient admissions and discharges under veterinary direction
  • Dispense and check medications accurately
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory, practice, and operational standards
  • Lead team briefings to coordinate effective shift running

Requirements

  • RCVS registered Veterinary Nurse
  • Proven experience delivering exceptional patient and client care
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team
  • Experience supporting and delivering nurse-led consultations
  • Strong coaching and influencing skills to support colleagues

About the Practice

Medivet Skeldale is an RCVS practice standards scheme accredited hospital and emergency service centre, as well as an ISFM Gold Level accredited cat-friendly practice. The recently refurbished facility includes three large consulting rooms, a large operating theatre, dedicated dog and cat kennels, an imaging suite with digital radiography, ultrasound and endoscopy, dental X-ray capabilities, a well-equipped prep area, and a spacious waiting area. Across both the dedicated night and day teams, there are multiple certificate holders in various disciplines.
