About the Role

North Downs Specialist Referrals is seeking an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse to join their growing team in a unique hybrid role combining diagnostics and twilight ward nursing. This part-time permanent position (29 hours per week) offers flexibility with set shift patterns: Monday and Tuesday day shifts (either 08:30–17:30 or 10:00–19:00, depending on your preference) plus Thursday and Friday twilight shifts (16:00–23:00). If you’re looking for predictable hours that fit around other commitments, this is an excellent opportunity.

The practice is an internationally recognised referral centre of excellence, home to over 60 RVNs and 32 recognised specialists spanning surgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, oncology, neurology, cardiology, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, and anaesthesia. You’ll be working alongside experienced colleagues in a supportive environment where your development genuinely matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the diagnostic team two days per week, working closely with the diagnostic supervisor, radiologists, and radiographers to maintain high standards of patient and client care
  • Conduct nurse discharges during twilight shifts, ensuring clients receive comprehensive aftercare information and feel confident managing their pet’s recovery at home
  • Perform nurse admissions, settling inpatients into the hospital and preparing them for their procedures
  • Provide ongoing inpatient care across multiple disciplines in partnership with the nursing team, Patient Care Assistants, and Interns
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the diagnostic department and wards, maintaining exemplary standards of patient care and client communication
  • Assist with complex and challenging cases requiring specialist knowledge and careful attention

Requirements

  • Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with minimum 2 years’ experience in a multi-disciplinary referral practice
  • Experience working in a veterinary referral hospital, or willingness to learn new clinical skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Genuine passion for animal care and welfare
  • Right to Work in the UK
  • Confident, approachable, and hardworking approach to inpatient and client care
