About the Role

Pet Medics Worsley Hospital is seeking an experienced veterinary surgeon to join its dedicated Weekend ECC team. This is a weekend-only position (Saturday and Sunday, 8-hour shifts on a 1:4 rota), perfect for vets looking to deepen their emergency and critical care expertise without the commitment of full-time on-call duties. You’ll be part of a thriving multi-site group that combines a 24-hour emergency hospital, a first-opinion practice, and a consulting branch, all located in Worsley, Manchester and commutable from across Greater Manchester and surrounding areas.

The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including four operating theatres, a dedicated intensive care unit, permanent CT scanner, digital X-ray, three ultrasound machines, endoscopy and laparoscopy capabilities, mechanical ventilation, and a fully operational in-house laboratory. You’ll be working alongside a highly experienced clinical team featuring Certificate holders in emergency and critical care, surgery, medicine, imaging, dermatology, dentistry, ophthalmology, cardiology, and clinical pathology. The wider team includes nurses with advanced diplomas in ECC, anaesthesia, surgery, medicine, and nutrition—meaning you’ll never be without expert support.

Accommodation can be provided if required for your shifts, and the practice holds Gold Cat Friendly Clinic status alongside Silver awards for being rabbit and dog friendly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver emergency and critical care across a busy 24-hour hospital setting during weekend shifts
  • Conduct patient consultations and perform basic surgical procedures with confidence
  • Collaborate with a team of 37 veterinary surgeons and specialist Certificate holders
  • Provide high-quality clinical care supported by advanced diagnostic and surgical facilities
  • Work flexibly within a structured weekend rota (1 in 4 weekends, Saturday and Sunday 8-hour shifts)
  • Contribute to continuous care for 24-hour hospitalised patients

Requirements

  • Qualified veterinary surgeon (RCVS registered)
  • Confidence in consultations and basic surgical procedures
  • ECC experience desirable but not essential—the practice supports those looking to gain experience in emergency medicine
  • Willingness to learn from experienced colleagues and Certificate holders
  • Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice in ECC considered a bonus
