About the Role

This is a pivotal opportunity to establish a new Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) service at Pride Veterinary Referrals in Derby. You’ll work alongside a 100+ strong veterinary team in a specialist-led, collaborative environment where you’ll develop protocols for emergency and complex case handling, manage case transfers, and mentor clinicians and nurses across the ECC team and wider hospital. Your role bridges specialist referral care with primary care partners and the night out-of-hours service, ensuring seamless patient transitions and high-quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the launch and development of the specialist ECC service, working collaboratively with other referral specialisms (anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, orthopaedics, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology)
  • Establish effective protocols and pathways for emergency and complex case management, including triage and case transfers
  • Provide clinical supervision and training to ECC nurses and junior clinicians
  • Deliver educational support and CPD to referring veterinary partners and primary care colleagues
  • Work closely with the dedicated night team to ensure continuity of 24/7 care
  • Contribute to hospital quality improvement and clinical governance

Requirements

  • Boarded ECC specialist (or equivalent recognised credential)
  • Enthusiasm for building services and shaping clinical culture from inception
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work effectively across a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience in training, mentoring, and supporting junior clinicians and nursing staff
  • Passion for evidence-based practice and CPD delivery

About the Practice

Pride Veterinary Referrals is a multi-disciplinary small animal referral hospital and part of IVC Evidensia. The practice employs over 300 staff across 10 sites in the East Midlands and serves as the referral hospital for the Scarsdale Veterinary Group. Pride provides 24/7 veterinary care with specialist-led services in anaesthesia and analgesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, neurology, oncology, and ophthalmology. The hospital also offers advanced practitioner-led cardiology, on-site physiotherapy, and hydrotherapy services.

The facility includes 5 operating theatres, a full imaging suite (X-Ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound), and an on-site laboratory. Pride works closely with the University of Nottingham, hosting veterinary students rotating through primary and referral services. The 100+ strong team operates in a fast-paced, challenging yet supportive environment where patient care and collaboration are core values.
