About the Role

This is a full-time clinical training residency commencing Spring 2026, specifically designed to prepare you for ECVIM-CA (European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – Companion Animal) examinations. Based at Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Basildon, you’ll work within a dedicated Internal Medicine team alongside specialists in soft tissue surgery, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and anaesthesia—creating a truly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment for complex case management.

You’ll engage in twice-daily service rounds, clinical investigations, and active management of internal medicine referral patients from across the UK. The role combines hands-on clinical experience with structured educational development, including journal clubs, seminars, and case-based learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily patient care, consultations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments under the supervision of ECVIM-CA diplomates
  • Manage in-patients and emergency cases within the internal medicine service
  • Conduct clinical investigations and contribute to diagnostic imaging interpretation
  • Maintain detailed case logs and prepare case reports as part of residency credentials
  • Participate actively in journal clubs, clinical rounds, and seminar presentations
  • Provide consultative advice to referring veterinary surgeons and communicate effectively with general practitioners and clients
  • Develop clinical skills in cardiology, clinical pathology, diagnostic imaging, and neurology through structured training
  • Engage in clinical research activities and contribute to the team’s evidence-based approach

Requirements

  • Registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to practise in the United Kingdom
  • Graduated from an institution approved by the European Association of Veterinary Education Establishments (EAVEE)
  • Minimum 12 months’ experience in primary care practice
  • Completion of a rotating internship or equivalent training
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English (conversational and medical)
  • Valid Right to Work in the UK
  • Strong interest in veterinary internal medicine with demonstrated commitment to progressing clinical knowledge and skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Proactive approach to learning and professional development
  • Professional and caring approach to patient and client care

Southfields Veterinary Specialists is a leading multi-disciplinary referral centre in Basildon, Essex, part of Linnaeus (Mars Veterinary Health). The practice delivers comprehensive specialist services across soft tissue surgery, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and anaesthesia, alongside a dedicated Internal Medicine team. The Internal Medicine department has particular interests in haematology and immune-mediated diseases, supported by a team of experienced medicine nurses and state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
