About the Role

The Barn Animal Practice is seeking an enthusiastic Veterinary Surgeon to join their forward-thinking team in Basingstoke. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a purpose-built, modern facility where you’ll enjoy a healthy balance between consulting and surgery. With a 1:4 Saturday rota and no out-of-hours commitments, you can plan your weekends with confidence whilst delivering excellent clinical care to a large, loyal client base.

The practice has served the local community for over 50 years and has earned Silver Cat Friendly and Dog Friendly Accreditations. You’ll be part of a vibrant, collaborative team where daily rounds, in-house training, and regular clinical governance meetings are the norm—not the exception. Whether your interests lie in feline medicine, general surgery, exotics, or ophthalmology, you’ll find colleagues to learn from and grow alongside.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-standard clinical care across a varied caseload of small animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, small mammals, and exotics
  • Perform diagnostic procedures using modern imaging equipment: digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, and rhinoscopy
  • Conduct routine and surgical consults in a busy, well-equipped practice with two dedicated surgical theatres
  • Contribute to the collaborative clinical environment through participation in daily rounds and governance meetings
  • Work some Saturday shifts (1:4 rota), including occasional sole charge responsibility on these days
  • Support the practice’s commitment to local charity work and professional development initiatives

Requirements

  • Registered Veterinary Surgeon (RCVS qualified)
  • Strong clinical communication skills and commitment to high clinical standards
  • Essential: basic proficiency in abdominal ultrasound due to the medical caseload
  • Desirable: experience or interest in diagnostic imaging
  • Desirable: cardiac ultrasound experience
  • Comfortable working sole charge during some Saturday shifts
  • Confident in making independent clinical decisions
  • Team-oriented mindset with a growth mindset and genuine interest in continuous professional development

Benefits

  • Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum (FTE) and depending on experience
  • Leave: 5 weeks annual holiday plus bank holidays and birthday leave
  • Professional support: RCVS and VDS fees paid by the practice
  • Pension: employer contribution to your pension scheme
  • Life assurance: included as standard
  • Professional development: extensive internal CPD and fully funded external training to support certificates and further qualifications
  • Wellbeing: enhanced equal family leave and access to comprehensive wellbeing package
  • Lifestyle perks: e-car salary sacrifice scheme and relocation support available
