About the Role

This part-time position offers up to 32 hours per week flexibly distributed across 2, 3, or 4 days, with Saturday coverage on a 1:4 rota and no overnight on-call duties. You’ll join a vibrant, purpose-built practice in Basingstoke that’s been serving the local community for over 50 years, combining varied consult work with surgery in a genuinely collaborative environment.

The Barn Animal Practice is a friendly, sociable team where clinical excellence and genuine care go hand-in-hand. You’ll work alongside colleagues with diverse interests—including an Advanced Practitioner in Feline Medicine and vets studying towards specialist certificates—so there’s real scope to develop your own interests, whether that’s diagnostic imaging, feline internal medicine, exotic care, or general surgery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver small animal veterinary care across consults and surgical procedures in two purpose-built theatres
  • Work flexibly across 2–4 days per week (up to 32 hours), with Saturday coverage on a 1:4 rota
  • Manage sole charge during some Saturday shifts, making independent clinical decisions with confidence
  • Contribute to daily rounds, in-house training sessions, and clinical governance meetings with the wider vet team
  • Care for dogs, cats, rabbits, and a diverse range of small mammals and exotic species (guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, tortoises, birds)
  • Utilise modern diagnostic equipment including digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, and in-house laboratory facilities

Requirements

  • Registered with the RCVS and eligible to practise in the UK
  • Experience working in small animal practice
  • Comfortable working sole charge during some Saturday shifts
  • Confident making independent clinical decisions
  • Interest in diagnostic imaging and basic proficiency desirable
  • Cardiac ultrasound experience desirable
  • A growth mindset and genuine commitment to teamwork

About the Practice

The Barn Animal Practice is part of Linnaeus and Mars Veterinary Health, the largest family-owned veterinary company in the world. As a purpose-built facility, the practice features two surgical theatres, a dedicated nurse consult room, ample client parking, and modern diagnostic capabilities including digital radiography with bucky table, dental radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, rhinoscopy, and a fully equipped in-house laboratory. The team has earned Silver Cat Friendly and Dog Friendly accreditation, with separate cat waiting areas and staff holding additional qualifications in these areas.

The practice maintains a large, long-standing client base and actively supports local charities through fundraising events while offering work experience placements to inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals.
