Ready to join a thriving independent practice where clinical excellence meets genuine work-life balance? The Hampshire Vet is offering a rare opportunity to specialise in internal medicine within a supportive 14-vet team that actually values your wellbeing.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

1:5 weekend rota (Saturday and Sunday 8am–7pm) with time off in lieu. Two long weekends per 5-week cycle. Own on-site night team provides 24/7 cover—day vets do not work out-of-hours shifts.

About the Role

The Hampshire Vet is seeking an experienced veterinary surgeon with a strong passion for internal medicine to join their growing independent practice in Basingstoke. This is a full-time role working a structured 4-day week with protected lunch breaks and set admin time daily, allowing you to develop skills across all areas of practice while maintaining healthy boundaries. Weekend duties are on a manageable 1:5 rota (Saturday and Sunday, 8am–7pm) with time off in lieu and two long weekends in each 5-week cycle.

You’ll be joining a practice founded in 2022 by Emily and Jamie, which has rapidly expanded from a mobile service to a hospital-standard facility with 24/7 on-site out-of-hours coverage. The practice achieved RCVS Small Animal Practice accreditation and ISFM Gold status, and is now working towards RCVS Hospital status with exciting infrastructure developments planned, including three operating theatres, a dedicated dental suite, an isolation unit, and investment in a full laparoscopic surgical suite.

The role offers genuine impact: you’ll contribute to a practice where clinical freedom and autonomy are actively encouraged, individual strengths are supported, and career development is prioritised alongside patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-standard small animal medicine with a focus on internal medicine cases
  • Share operating and consulting duties across the 14-vet team to develop breadth of clinical experience
  • Collaborate with multiple certificate holders and advanced practitioners in cardiology, ophthalmology, emergency and critical care, surgery, and dentistry
  • Work alongside a 12-strong RVN team and three dedicated night RVNs to provide continuity of care
  • Contribute to the practice’s clinical decision-making, drawing on visiting specialists in cardiology, orthopaedics, and ophthalmology, and referral partnerships with Anderson Moores, Lumbry Park, and Fitzpatrick’s
  • Participate in evidence-based medicine practices and exceptional client communication

Requirements

  • MRCVS or equivalent UK veterinary qualification
  • Certificate or Advanced Practitioner status in your clinical interest area (desirable but not essential)
  • Strong interest in internal medicine with desire to develop expertise
  • Commitment to collaborative practice and evidence-based medicine
  • Flexibility to work within the weekend rota system

Benefits

  • Salary: £40,000–£75,000 depending on experience
  • 6.6 weeks holiday including bank holidays
  • CPD encouraged, with certificates supported and funded
  • Professional membership fees paid (RCVS and VDS)
  • Private healthcare
  • 4-day working week with protected breaks and admin time
  • Structured weekend rota with time off in lieu

About the Practice

Since launch, the team has grown from 3 to 38 staff, including a dedicated night team providing round-the-clock care.

The practice won New Business of the Year at The Basingstoke Inspire Business Awards 2024 and the Wellbeing Champion Award in 2025, reflecting its reputation for clinical excellence and a supportive, collaborative culture where staff feel valued and encouraged to pursue their clinical interests. The practice is located in the heart of Hampshire countryside with excellent transport links to London and other major cities.
