Up to £65,000/yr DOE
Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
Full Time, Part Time
Dedicated OOH
Ready to shape emergency farm care across West Wales with genuine flexibility? This is a rare opportunity to work OOH on your terms—1 week on/1 week off, day shifts welcome during downtime, and the freedom to build a role around your lifestyle, not ours.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Dedicated out-of-hours emergency role for farm clients. Flexible rota options: 1 week on/1 week off OR 2 weeks on/2 weeks off patterns. Can include day work during off-weeks if desired. Emergencies can be attended from home if local, or from provided accommodation during on-call periods.

About the Role

You’ll be the trusted emergency vet for beef, sheep, and mixed farms across Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, and Cardiganshire—working the calls that matter most to farming families. This is out-of-hours emergency work with genuine seasonal variation: spring obstetrics and acute presentations keep you sharp, then quieter periods give you real downtime to recover.

Based at The Oak Veterinary Group in Haverfordwest, you’ll have the option to respond from home if you’re local, or use provided accommodation during on-call weeks. This role suits a vet who’s confident working independently at night, builds strong relationships with farmers, and values flexibility as much as clinical challenge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide out-of-hours emergency cover for farm clients, with emphasis on obstetrics and acute presentations
  • Work independently during night shifts, managing farm emergencies across the three-county region
  • Build trusted relationships with local farming businesses and support day-time practice teams
  • Attend emergencies either from home (if local) or from on-call accommodation
  • Respond to seasonal case variation, with busier spring periods and quieter recovery windows

Requirements

  • Qualified veterinary surgeon (RCVS registered)
  • Confidence and competence working alone during night shifts
  • Experience or genuine interest in farm emergency medicine
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build farmer relationships
  • Flexibility to work variable rota patterns

Benefits

  • Competitive salary up to £65,000 FTE, depending on experience and agreed working pattern
  • £5,000 welcome bonus
  • £5,000 relocation allowance
  • Vehicle provided
  • Accommodation available during on-call periods if required
  • Visa sponsorship available
  • 6.6 weeks’ holiday including bank holidays, plus your birthday off
  • £1,250 annual CPD allowance plus 40 hours paid CPD time
  • Private medical insurance
  • Enhanced family-friendly leave and pay
  • 24/7 confidential Employee Assistance Programme
  • BVA membership, VDS cover, and RCVS fees covered
  • Access to IVC Evidensia Training Centres and Vetlexicon online resources
  • £1,250 annual Care Fund for every vet
  • Cycle to Work and Green Car schemes
  • Retail discounts and cashback offers
  • Reduced-cost veterinary care for your own pets

Flexible Working Patterns

The practice genuinely shapes roles around the right person. Options include:

  • 1 week on / 1 week off OOH rota
  • 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off OOH rota
  • Alternative rota patterns by discussion
  • Day work during off weeks if you want to maintain and develop clinical skills
  • Flexibility around start dates and working arrangements

About the Practice

The Oak Veterinary Group is a long-established mixed practice serving the Haverfordwest area and wider Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire region.
