🕐 Schedule & Rota

1:4 weekend rota with 2 days off during the week. Bank Holiday participation required with additional pay.

About the Role

This is a fantastic opportunity to build or advance a career in referral anaesthesia at one of the UK’s leading veterinary teaching hospitals. You’ll work primarily within a busy theatre and treatment area complex, supporting specialist clinicians on a diverse range of advanced surgical and medical cases. The role combines hands-on peri-anaesthetic care with patient monitoring, analgesia management, and recovery nursing—exactly what drives nursing excellence in a referral setting.

To maintain a broad clinical skillset, you’ll also rotate through key hospital departments. With a 1-in-4 weekend rota (and additional weekday days off to compensate), you’ll achieve a genuine work-life balance while staying connected to the breadth of hospital practice. Bank Holiday participation is also part of the role, with additional pay.

Referral or anaesthesia experience is desirable but absolutely not essential—the University is committed to training, mentorship, and ongoing professional development for nurses at all stages of their careers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver peri-anaesthetic nursing care across a wide range of advanced surgical and medical referral cases
  • Monitor patient vital signs and maintain anaesthetic records during procedures
  • Manage analgesia and post-operative recovery, ensuring optimal patient comfort and safety
  • Rotate through other key hospital areas to maintain clinical breadth and support the wider team
  • Participate in weekend and Bank Holiday rota as required
  • Contribute to a supportive, inclusive clinical environment alongside specialist clinicians

Requirements

  • RVN registration (or eligible to register with the RCVS)
  • Passion for anaesthesia and/or referral practice
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • Commitment to professional development and ongoing learning
  • Ability to work flexibly, including weekends and bank holidays
  • Referral or anaesthesia experience desirable but not essential—training and mentorship provided

Benefits

  • 35-hour flexible working week
  • 41 days of leave per year (including public holidays)
  • Competitive pension scheme
  • Additional pay for Bank Holiday working
  • 6% allowance for weekend working
  • 20% staff discount on veterinary services and products
  • CPD allowance and subsidised further education
