Ready to join a supportive two-site practice where work-life balance actually matters? Usk Vets offers a genuine 1:3 weekend rota, flexible working hours, and a team of six vets who genuinely collaborate—plus you're just 45 minutes from Cardiff and Bristol, with the Brecon Beacons on your doorstep.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

No out-of-hours surgery run by practice; emergency cover handled by VetsNow (ten-minute drive). Weekend rota: 1:3 shared between six vets. No night shifts.

About the Role

You’ll be joining Usk Vets, a two-site small animal practice nestled in Monmouthshire, with your branch surgery just a ten-minute drive away. The practice sits within walking distance of Usk town centre and overlooks the Usk river—a spot staff and their dogs enjoy during lunchtimes. With Cardiff and Bristol both under 45 minutes away, you’ll have access to vibrant city amenities while maintaining a genuinely rural lifestyle.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week, typically 8:30am–7pm across four days) with flexible working hours negotiable to suit your needs. You’ll work a manageable 1:3 weekend rota shared across six vets, and out-of-hours emergencies are handled by VetsNow just ten minutes away—meaning no night shifts and genuine time off.

You’ll work across both sites on a shared rota, rotating between consulting, surgical, and inpatient work. The practice boasts certificate holders in surgery, meaning most cases are diagnosed and treated in-house, and you’ll support colleague development through mentorship and clinical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver clinical care across consulting, surgical, and inpatient duties at both practice sites
  • Perform surgical procedures and advanced diagnostics using the practice’s own laboratory, DR X-ray with SignalPet software, dental X-ray, ultrasound, and endoscopy equipment
  • Provide clinical mentorship to junior vets and support their professional development
  • Maintain RCVS PSS standards and contribute to the practice’s silver-level ISFM Cat Friendly accreditation
  • Collaborate with a team of 10 nurses and wider support staff to deliver excellent clinical and customer care
  • Participate in the shared weekend rota and contribute to practice planning and decision-making

Requirements

  • Qualified Veterinary Surgeon registered with the RCVS
  • Confidence in sole charge work is desirable but not essential—the practice welcomes vets at all stages of their careers
  • Friendly, confident, and genuinely team-oriented approach to practice
  • Commitment to high clinical standards and continuous professional development
  • UK veterinary qualification or recognized equivalent with right to work in the UK

Benefits

  • Time Off: 6.6 weeks’ holiday including bank holidays, plus your birthday off
  • Professional Development: £1,250 annual CPD allowance plus 40 hours paid CPD time; certificate and advanced learning support; access to Vetlexicon online resources; world-leading IVC Evidensia Training Centres; £1,250 annual Care Fund for every vet
  • Health & Wellbeing: Private medical insurance; enhanced family-friendly leave and pay; 24/7 confidential Employee Assistance Programme
  • Professional Memberships: BVA membership, VDS cover, and RCVS fees paid
  • Additional Perks: Cycle to Work and Green Car schemes (eligibility applies); retail discounts and cashback offers; reduced-cost veterinary care for your own pets
