Ready for a night shift role with genuine work-life balance? Valley Vets' 7-nights-on, 7-nights-off rota means you'll have proper time to recover. Join a multi-disciplinary hospital with advanced facilities, a stable team, and the clinical depth to keep you engaged.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Dedicated night shift role; 12-hour nights on a 7-nights-on, 7-nights-off rota (averages 42 hrs/week). This is a permanent night position, not a rotational OOH commitment.

About the Role

This is a dedicated night shift position at Valley Veterinary Hospital, a 24/7 multi-disciplinary facility in Cardiff. You’ll work 12-hour nights on a 7-nights-on, 7-nights-off rota—a pattern that genuinely protects your work-life balance and averages 42 hours per week. Your role involves delivering advanced nursing care across a wide range of medical and surgical cases, working alongside vets, fellow RVNs, and ACAs to provide seamless emergency and critical care to the hospital’s own patients and referrals from surrounding practices.

Valley Vets has been serving South Wales since the 1940s, and the practice is known for remarkable staff retention—many team members have been there 10–30 years. That stability speaks volumes about the culture. Based in Gwaelod-y-garth near Cardiff, you’ll have access to vibrant city amenities, coastal villages in the Vale of Glamorgan, and the Brecon Beacons—all within reach.

This role suits experienced RVNs who are confident working independently and managing critical patients. The hospital’s investment in both equipment and team development means you’ll have the platform to pursue your clinical interests and develop further expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver advanced nursing care to medical and surgical patients during night shifts
  • Work independently and confidently in critical care scenarios
  • Support the collaborative approach between first opinion and ECC teams
  • Contribute to the 24/7 inpatient care service
  • Maintain high clinical standards using the hospital’s advanced facilities (CT, ultrasound, blood analysis equipment including TEG and blood gases)
  • Work as part of a large, multi-disciplinary team including vets, RVNs, ACAs, and reception staff

Requirements

  • Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) qualification
  • Substantial clinical knowledge and experience—not a role for newly qualified nurses
  • Ability to work independently and manage critical patients with confidence
  • Willingness to commit to the 7-nights-on, 7-nights-off rota

Benefits

  • Salary: £44,500–£45,500 depending on skills and experience
  • Holiday: 8 weeks paid leave (equivalent to 4 working weeks due to the week-on, week-off rota pattern)
  • Sick pay: Average 2 weeks full pay and 4 weeks half pay
  • CPD: £600 per annum plus 3 days’ study time; certificate study encouraged via application process
  • Professional fees: VDS and RCVS membership fees covered, plus one additional professional subscription
  • Colleague discount: 50% off services and cost-price products
  • Workplace pension
  • Enhanced family leave: Improved paternity, maternity, adoption, shared parental leave, and surrogacy pay
  • Paid volunteering day
  • Health Shield: Contributions towards health and wellbeing treatments (dentistry, sports massage, etc.)
  • My Perks: Discounts and cashback on shopping, travel, entertainment, and more
  • Health insurance: Via group payroll deduction
  • Life insurance: 1× annual salary
  • Cycle to work scheme

The team’s longevity—with many staff members serving 10–30 years—demonstrates a culture where people stay and thrive.
