About the Role

This is a 12-month full-time maternity cover position on the day nursing team at Village Vet Milton, a specialist ECC and medicine hospital. You’ll work 42 hours per week across a mixture of early and late shifts, Monday to Friday, with a 1:6 weekend rota (3 days back in lieu) and weekend-only on-call duties. This is a day-only role with a dedicated night and twilight team on site, so you’ll never be working alone.

Milton Hospital sees an exciting and genuinely varied caseload thanks to the many local practices that refer in, combined with the in-house Vet24 out-of-hours service. Every day brings different cases and learning opportunities – from routine inpatient care to emergency and critical care nursing. You’ll work alongside multiple experienced vet surgeons, RVNs, and support staff, many with their own interests and certificates, creating an ideal environment for developing your clinical skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing high-quality inpatient care and monitoring across the ward
  • Supporting surgical procedures, anaesthesia management, and emergency critical care cases
  • Running and supporting nurse clinics (actively encouraged)
  • Assisting with diagnostics, laboratory work, imaging and patient investigations
  • Delivering excellent client communication and advocating for patient welfare
  • Working collaboratively with day, twilight, and night nursing teams
  • Maintaining high standards of patient care, organisation, and cleanliness
  • Participating in weekend and on-call rota duties as scheduled
  • Upholding the values and culture of Village Vets Cambridge

Requirements

  • RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse qualification
  • Previous nursing experience is ideal, though newly qualified RVNs will be considered
  • Confidence or clear potential in emergency and critical care, anaesthesia, inpatient care, and nurse clinics
  • Strong team player with a positive attitude and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a busy, varied hospital environment
  • Enthusiasm for professional development and continuous learning
  • Patient-centred approach to care

About the Practice

Village Vet Milton is an RCVS-accredited specialist hospital with a real emphasis on emergency and critical care, and medicine. Hosting the Vet24 out-of-hours service on site, the hospital benefits from genuine case continuity between day and night clinical work. The facility is fully equipped with endoscopes, full in-house laboratory (including blood gas and coagulation analysis), digital X-rays with dental capability, ultrasound (linear and phased array probes), video gastroscope and bronchoscope, fully equipped ECC theatre, dental suite, separate cat and dog wards, Silver Cat Friendly status, Dog Friendly clinic accreditation, and on-site parking for staff.

The day nursing team comprises 10 RVNs, student nurses, and PCAs, supported by 6 dedicated night nurses and a strong multidisciplinary team of veterinary surgeons and clinical staff.
