Ready to work nights with structure and genuine downtime? Village Vets St Albans is recruiting an RVN for their 24-hour emergency service with a 4 nights on, 8 nights off rota—proper time to rest between shifts.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

4 nights on, 8 nights off rolling rota. 24-hour emergency hospital service.

About the Role

Village Vets St Albans is a well-established 24-hour small animal emergency hospital serving practices across Hertfordshire. You’ll join the night team as a hands-on Registered Veterinary Nurse, working a predictable 4 nights on, 8 nights off rota that gives you genuine recovery time between shifts. This is a permanent part-time position with a stimulating caseload—you’ll be triaging emergency calls, supporting surgical and medical procedures, and leading continuity of care from night through to day handover.

The hospital is fully equipped with diagnostic facilities, an on-site laboratory, dedicated cat and dog wards, and a theatre suite, so you’ll have the tools and team structure to deliver confident nursing care during the quiet hours when focus and clinical decision-making matter most.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assign cases to nursing and support staff throughout your shifts, taking a proactive, holistic approach to inpatient care under veterinary surgeon guidance
  • Triage out-of-hours calls and manage patient arrivals, supporting the vet with appointments, treatments, and procedures
  • Lead detailed patient handovers from the night team to the day team, providing comprehensive clinical updates on current and new inpatients
  • Participate in cleaning and maintenance of hospital areas alongside the day team
  • Engage actively in CPD and professional development, with opportunities to pursue advanced qualifications in emergency and critical care nursing

Requirements

  • Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) qualification
  • Tier 2/3 level nursing experience (or equivalent clinical capability)
  • Ability to work night shifts and thrive in a fast-paced emergency environment
  • Strong communication skills for handovers and multidisciplinary teamwork

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience, reflecting the Linnaeus Nursing Career Framework
  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • External CPD allowance plus access to extensive free Linnaeus CPD programme
  • Career progression opportunities via clinical pathways or people leadership routes
  • Life assurance and enhanced sickness pay
  • Enhanced family leave
  • Staff discount schemes including gym membership
  • E-car salary sacrifice scheme and cycle-to-work scheme
  • Employer-contribution pension scheme
  • Wellness programme including employee assistance programme, eyecare vouchers, free annual flu jab
  • Recruitment referral reward scheme
