About the Role

This is a full-time RVN position at Westway Veterinary Group’s flagship West Road Hospital in Newcastle—a 100% small animal practice that’s been caring for pets across the North East since 1975. You’ll work 40 hours per week on a four-day rotation with 10-hour shifts, including weekend commitments (currently 1 in 6 Saturdays and 1 in 8 Sundays). The hospital is part of a progressive 15-site group supported by a Tier 3 RCVS facility, so you’ll have access to specialist services and continued professional development that genuinely matters.

You’ll be part of a dynamic team of over 50 nursing professionals—Senior Nurses, RVNs, Student RVNs, and Animal Nursing Assistants—in a practice that prioritises team wellbeing and sociability. The practice holds ISFM Gold Standard status and silver Investor in the Environment accreditation, reflecting their commitment to standards beyond the clinic.

An ideal candidate would have (or be keen to develop) an interest in clinical coaching, laparoscopic surgery, orthopaedics, or working with the hospital’s Computed Tomography (CT) service. This is a chance to be genuinely involved in advancing your clinical skills in a supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver nursing care across a busy Tier 3 RCVS hospital with in-house surgical and diagnostic facilities
  • Support the dedicated feline unit (Gold Standard Cat Friendly Clinic accredited)
  • Assist with specialist services including orthopaedic care, laparoscopic surgery, and CT imaging
  • Contribute to the nursing team’s focus on clinical coaching and professional development
  • Maintain high clinical standards in a 100% small animal practice environment
  • Work collaboratively within a large, established team structure across multiple departments

Requirements

  • Current RVN registration with RCVS
  • Enthusiasm and compassion for small animal nursing
  • Ability to work flexibly, including day, night, and weekend shifts
  • Interest in professional development and further study (preferred)

Benefits

  • Time off: 6 weeks paid holiday including bank holidays (pro rata), buy and sell annual leave scheme
  • Professional development: £600 CPD allowance per annum (pro rata), 3 paid CPD days per year (pro rata), unlimited CPD/training support
  • Health & wellbeing: Private medical insurance available, RCVS membership paid, VDS cover, Health Shield contributions (dentistry, sports massage, and more), company sick pay
  • Family-friendly: Enhanced paternity, maternity, adoption, shared parental leave and surrogacy pay
  • Lifestyle perks: Cycle to work scheme, colleague discount scheme, My Perks (shopping, travel, entertainment discounts and cashback), one paid volunteer day per year
  • Workplace culture: Strong focus on employee wellbeing, colleague engagement survey, Endometriosis Friendly Employer status
