About the Role

White Cross Vets in Coulby, Middlesbrough is seeking an experienced Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join its established four-vet team. This is a full-time position working 40 hours across four days, with Saturday rota participation on a 1:5 basis with time off in lieu – crucially, there are no out-of-hours commitments. You’ll have the flexibility to shape your working pattern, choosing between ops and consultations to suit your interests and lifestyle.

Located near the vibrant mix of North Yorkshire Moors, coastal walks, countryside, and easy access to city amenities, the practice boasts excellent transport links and local facilities including a shopping centre, supermarket, and park. The team is actively working towards Dog Friendly clinic accreditation while already holding Cat Friendly ISFM silver status – a reflection of their commitment to high standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality clinical care across general practice, with flexibility to focus on surgical or medicine work depending on your interests
  • Contribute to the practice’s diverse clinic offerings – working alongside the nursing team who run weight management, behaviour, and senior clinics
  • Work within a supportive team structure that values mentorship and clinical development (the practice supports those interested in clinical coaching)
  • Participate in Saturday rota duties on a 1:5 frequency with TOIL arrangements
  • Support the practice’s quality standards and welfare-focused approach to patient care

Requirements

  • Registered Veterinary Surgeon with experience in small animal practice
  • A collaborative approach – this team values supportive working relationships
  • Interest in developing clinical skills; background in surgery, medicine, or both equally valued
  • An interest in clinical coaching would be advantageous but not essential

About the Practice

White Cross Vets, Coulby is a spacious, well-resourced small animal practice at the Parkway Centre in Middlesbrough, part of the IVC Evidensia group. The team comprises four Veterinary Surgeons with diverse interests – the Clinical Lead, Rob, holds a GPCert in soft tissue surgery and Diploma in Management, and another vet is working towards her Cert AVP. This creates a supportive environment for continued professional development.

The nursing team is equally strong: five experienced RVNs (one with certificates in behaviour and emergency & critical care), a Head Nurse Rachael focused on clinical standards, a soon-to-be-qualified SVN, and three Client Care Co-Ordinators. Facilities are comprehensive, including a large prep area, theatre, x-ray room, four consult rooms, and recently upgraded kennels with separate cattery and isolation wards. Equipment includes dental x-ray, ultrasound, multi-parameters, warming infusion pumps, and full lab facilities (haematology, biochemistry, urinalysis, ACTH, T4, microscopy). There’s even a dedicated ‘chill-out’ room for well-earned breaks.
