🕐 Schedule & Rota

Dedicated night shifts: 7 nights on / 14 nights off. Hours 7:30 pm – 8:30 am. 0.75 FTE (averaging 31–33 hours per week).

About the Role

This is a genuine opportunity to work nights within a multi-disciplinary, RCVS-Accredited referral hospital combining emergency caseload with ongoing care of hospitalised GP and referral patients. You’ll work alongside experienced ECC veterinary surgeons with full referral clinician backup available. Based on the Wirral Peninsula near major transport links and airports with easy access to Liverpool and Manchester, this is a realistic and sustainable night role.

The clinic operates a 7 nights on / 14 nights off rota (0.75 FTE, averaging 31–33 hours per week) with shifts from 7:30 pm to 8:30 am. There’s no “restricted access” equipment, no off-site call centres—your calls are handled locally, and an on-site daytime admin team supports the service so night teams can focus entirely on patients. Where appropriate, home visits are accommodated to extend compassionate emergency care beyond clinic walls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage emergency out-of-hours phone calls and acute presentations
  • Provide overnight nursing care for GP and referral inpatients
  • Admit and triage routine and emergency referrals
  • Deliver high-level inpatient care including management of feeding tubes, catheters, and transfusion medicine
  • Run in-house diagnostics and laboratory work with confidence
  • Typically manage 5–15 inpatients per night with close involvement in referral case nursing and continuity of care

Requirements

  • Qualified RVN with genuine interest in ECC and inpatient care
  • Confidence with complex anaesthesia and critical patients (preferred)
  • Ability to remain calm and methodical under pressure
  • Strong clinical standards and excellent record keeping
  • Empathetic client communication skills
  • Collaborative mindset with ability to work closely with day teams

Wirral Pet 999 is the only independent, dedicated out-of-hours clinic serving the Wirral and Chester area. The service exists to provide calm, high-quality emergency and inpatient care overnight for patients, clients, and the clinical teams who support them. Located inside Peninsula Vet Referrals, it operates as an RCVS-Accredited referral hospital.

The clinic provides full access to referral-level equipment and diagnostics including CT scanning, endoscopy, ultrasound, extensive in-house laboratory facilities, drip pumps, syringe drivers, and on-site transfusion products with participation in the Blood Sharing Scheme. Calls are handled by the local team with on-site daytime administration support.
