About the Role
This is a dedicated out-of-hours position offering a genuinely manageable schedule: 7 nights on, 14 nights off across a 1-in-3 rota. You'll work 31.5 hours per week across evening and overnight shifts (18:45–08:15) in a modern 24-hour hospital setting. The role combines independent clinical decision-making during quieter periods with collaborative care alongside a dedicated veterinary nurse throughout your shift, giving you both autonomy and support.
Located in Solihull, 608 Vets is a well-established primary care practice with genuine depth—16 vets, 30 nursing associates, and 10 administrative staff create a genuine safety net for complex cases. You'll have access to dedicated bedrooms for rest during quieter periods, diagnostic tools that inspire confidence, and a team that genuinely values professional development.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver emergency and urgent care to patients during evening and overnight hours
- Perform thorough clinical examinations, medical treatment, and surgical intervention as required
- Work independently to make confident clinical decisions during overnight shifts whilst supporting continuity of care for day-team cases
- Utilise advanced diagnostic equipment including endoscopy, ultrasound, digital X-ray, multi-parameter monitoring, and internal laboratory facilities
- Manage a range of surgical procedures from routine neutering to exploratory laparotomies and orthopaedic surgeries
- Maintain strong communication with the clinical team and ensure all clinical protocols are followed
- Contribute to a supportive, collaborative environment that values excellence in patient and client care
- Report to the Head Vet and work within the established practice framework
Requirements
- Confident, experienced Veterinary Surgeon with genuine interest in emergency and critical care (ECC)
- Comfortable working independently and making confident clinical decisions during overnight shifts
- Strong communication skills with commitment to maintaining clinical protocols
- Ability to work effectively as part of a busy, supportive team
- Competence and confidence with advanced diagnostic and monitoring equipment
- Current RCVS registration and full UK professional indemnity insurance

The practice operates a modern 24-hour hospital with state-of-the-art facilities including dedicated surgical theatres, dental suite, and separate wards for dogs, cats, and exotics. The team includes 16 vets, 30 nursing associates, and 10 administrative colleagues, led by a Clinical Director, two Head Vets, Clinical Nursing Manager, and Practice Manager. Six vets are currently pursuing specialist certificates in surgery, internal medicine, and exotics.
