Internal Medicine Veterinary Surgeon

About the Role

Wanstead Veterinary Hospital is looking for a veterinary surgeon to join its internal medicine team and support a busy hospital caseload with investigative and diagnostic work. This is a permanent, full-time role for someone who already has a certificate, or is working towards one, and who is confident with endoscopy and ultrasound cases.

The role sits within the group’s largest GP hospital and offers a mix of consulting, medical rota work and case investigation. You will be working in a setting that provides first opinion, emergency, critical care and referral services, with strong clinical support on site and across the wider branch network.

Your rota runs over a six-week cycle, averaging 40 hours per week across four days. Weekend work includes a 1 in 3 Saturday rotation and a 1 in 6 Sunday rotation, with up to two bank holidays per year and last resort on-call approximately once every two weeks.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide investigative and diagnostic support as part of the internal medicine team.
• Carry out consultations and examine pets presented to the hospital.
• Make management and treatment recommendations based on best practice and practice protocols.
• Investigate cases using tools such as radiography, endoscopy, ultrasound and blood testing.
• Prescribe and dispense medication in line with current medicines legislation and RCVS guidance.
• Work within the clinical consulting and medical rota.
• Support a strong team culture and good working relationships across the hospital.

Requirements

• Veterinary surgeon with a certificate already completed, or currently in progress.
• Prior experience with endoscopy and ultrasound is ideal.
• Ability to work independently while recognising when to seek support.
• Confident communicator with a client-centred approach.
• Good clinical reasoning and time management skills.

Wanstead Veterinary Hospital is the largest GP hospital in the group and serves clients and a local network of 20 plus branches. It offers first opinion, emergency, critical care and referral services, with state of the art diagnostic support including a CT scanner and a commercial laboratory.

The hospital also has a strong medical team, experienced surgeons carrying out advanced orthopaedic, soft tissue and minimally invasive surgery, and a sizeable support team including vets, RVNs, SVNs, VCAs and front of house staff.
