Veterinary Surgeon – Mixed Animal

Apply before: May 30, 2026

Up to £70,000/yr DOE
Pitlochry, Highland Perthshire, Scotland
Full Time, Part Time
Shared OOH
Ready to embrace genuine mixed practice? Join a close-knit team in the heart of Highland Perthshire where you'll manage everything from beef cattle and equine dentistry to small animal surgery—all within a supportive, fully-resourced environment.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

1:5 out-of-hours rota including weekends and weeknights, with time off in lieu following weekends. No routine weekend day work outside of OOH commitments.

About the Role

This is a genuinely varied mixed animal position at Heartland Veterinary Services, where you’ll work across a balanced caseload in one of Scotland’s most picturesque regions. With approximately 60% small animal and 40% large animal work, you’ll develop broad clinical skills across species while working within a close-knit, experienced team. The role is available on a full-time or part-time basis with flexible working patterns supported where possible, and you’ll participate in a manageable 1:5 out-of-hours rota with time off in lieu following weekends—no routine weekend day work outside of OOH commitments.

Based across two sites (Aberfeldy main hub and Pitlochry branch), you’ll be surrounded by mountains, rivers, and lochs, with excellent access to Perth, Dundee, Stirling, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. This is mixed practice with real depth: you’ll encounter beef cattle, sheep, pigs, deer, poultry, and camelids on the farm side; equine vaccinations, dentistry, and occasional colic cases; and a full small animal caseload including dogs, cats, and rabbits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality clinical care across small animal, farm, and equine cases within a structured two-site practice
  • Manage routine consultations, surgical procedures, and emergency cases across the mixed caseload
  • Participate in the 1:5 out-of-hours rota, including weekends and weeknights, with time off in lieu
  • Work collaboratively between Aberfeldy and Pitlochry branches to ensure case continuity and support team efficiency
  • Contribute to a supportive, team-focused clinical environment alongside 5 vets, 3 nurses, and support staff

Requirements

  • Veterinary degree and current RCVS registration (or eligible to register)
  • Experience or strong interest in mixed animal practice
  • Confidence managing a varied caseload across multiple species
  • Strong communication and client relationship skills
  • Flexible, collaborative, and proactive approach to work

Benefits

  • Salary: Up to £70,000 depending on experience, plus welcome bonus up to £5,000 and relocation allowance up to £5,000
  • Time Off: 6.8 weeks’ holiday including bank holidays
  • Professional Support: Funded learning and development including CPD allowance, BVA membership, VDS cover, and RCVS fees covered
  • Learning & Development: Access to IVC Evidensia Academy training centres, mentorship, regional clinical coaches, and peer networks
  • Healthcare: Private medical insurance and access to wellbeing support
  • Family Benefits: Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption, and surrogacy pay and leave
  • Lifestyle Schemes: Cycle to Work and Green Car schemes (eligibility applies)
  • Extras: Reduced-cost veterinary care for your own pets, retail discounts, and cashback offers
  • Care Fund: £1,250 annual Care Fund for every vet
