Night Veterinary Surgeon

About the Role

This is a permanent night vet position with Abivale Vets in Abingdon, focused on emergency and critical care. The rota runs on a 7 on, 14 off pattern, with nights worked Monday to Thursday 18:40 to 07:40, Friday 18:40 to 08:00, Saturday 18:00 to 09:00, Sunday 18:00 to 07:40, and bank holidays 18:00 to 07:40.

You will be based exclusively at the main Abingdon site and supported on shift by a night RVN. The role sits within a dedicated night team of vets and nurses, with the practice serving as the 24-hour emergency care provider for the surrounding area.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide overnight veterinary care for a busy emergency and critical care caseload.
• Work closely with the night RVN to support patient and client care.
• Use clinical judgement to manage complex cases during night shifts.
• Contribute to leadership, mentoring, and clinical excellence within the role.
• Support clinical governance, audits, quality improvement, and clinical complaints where needed.

Requirements

• A veterinary degree and RCVS registration.
• Significant experience in small or mixed animal practice.
• Advanced surgical and medical capability.
• Proven experience in mentoring, coaching, and supporting veterinary colleagues.
• Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
• Experience contributing to or leading clinical governance, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
• The ability to manage clinical complaints and provide professional guidance in complex situations.

About the Practice

Abivale Vets is part of IVC Evidensia and provides 24-hour emergency care for the surrounding area. The practice has access to ultrasound, x-ray, endoscope, dental x-ray, and an in-house lab for a range of blood work.

The main practice is within walking distance of historic Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and about 15 minutes from Oxford city centre. The advert also notes good transport links across the UK.
