Veterinary Surgeon - Weekend Emergency OOH

About the Role

This part-time Veterinary Surgeon position is based at New Priory Vets, Brighton, providing out of hours cover over weekends and bank holidays between 08:00 and 18:30. The rota averages 11 hours per week, with a commitment to every other weekend and a minimum of 4 bank holidays per year.

The role focuses on emergency daytime consultations, triaging urgent cases and supporting the hospital vet. You will also consult and care for inpatients alongside the ECC vet, working within a busy hospital environment where additional support is available from Brighton Veterinary Referrals if needed.

The practice is a 5 minute walk from the train station and around 20 minutes on foot from central Brighton, with a setting that combines city life, countryside and outdoor activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide weekend and bank holiday emergency cover at the main hospital site.
• Handle daytime emergency consultations and triage urgent and emergency cases.
• Support the hospital vet with inpatient care.
• Work alongside the ECC vet during out of hours shifts.
• Collaborate with the wider practice team and contribute to care for local clinic patients.

Requirements

• Veterinary degree and RCVS registration, or eligibility to register.
• Experience working out of hours with growing confidence in emergency cases.
• Confidence, motivation and a compassionate approach.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships.
• A proactive attitude toward learning, feedback and development.
• Professionalism, reliability and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

About the Practice

New Priory Vets, Brighton is an IVC Evidensia practice offering general practice services alongside emergency daytime care. The clinic provides medicine, surgery, radiography, CT, ultrasound and dentistry, supported by nursing clinics and excellent hospital facilities.

The site also benefits from on-site support from Brighton Veterinary Referrals when additional expertise is required. The emergency service, Priory Emergency Treatment Services (P.E.T.S.), is delivered from the flagship Brighton hospital by dedicated out of hours emergency care vets and nurses.
