Ready to join a tier 3 hospital with cutting-edge kit and a team that actually supports your development? Rutland House offers flexible working, certificate-focused mentorship, and a genuine work-life balance near Liverpool and Manchester.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

1:8 weekend rota (1 Saturday/Sunday per week OR 2 Saturdays and 1 Sunday across 8 weeks). Additional out-of-hours cover for holiday/sickness cover.

About the Role

You’ll be joining a supportive, certificate-focused team at a tier 3 hospital positioned perfectly between Liverpool, Manchester, and the stunning countryside of Wales and the Lake District. This role offers flexibility with a 4-day week and a manageable 1:8 weekend rota (either 1 Saturday/Sunday per week or 2 Saturdays and 1 Sunday across 8 weeks), plus some out-of-hours cover during holidays and sickness—not a heavy burden.

You’ll spend roughly 50% of your time in sole charge branch work (or branch-only with hospital backup if you prefer), with the other 50% in the main hospital environment. This is a genuine opportunity to develop skills in a collaborative setting where individual progression is actively encouraged. You’ll work alongside vets with certificates in medicine, surgery, and diagnostic imaging, as well as colleagues currently studying towards their own qualifications.

The team also maintains a close working relationship with their referral service, giving you additional support and development opportunities to work up cases to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performing consultations and routine surgical procedures including neutering and small animal surgery
  • Managing sole charge branch work independently, with hospital support available when needed
  • Contributing to a collaborative multi-disciplinary team across the hospital
  • Working with advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment including digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, dental radiography, CO2 laser, laparoscopic equipment, 64-slice CT, and 1.5T MRI
  • Engaging in case development and higher-standard working practices
  • Some Out-of-Hours cover for holiday/sickness

Requirements

  • Qualified veterinary surgeon with UK registration (or eligible for RCVS registration)
  • Experience and confidence in general practice consultations and routine surgical procedures
  • Ability to work independently in sole charge settings
  • Client and patient-focused approach
  • Collaborative team player with interest in professional development

Benefits

  • Competitive salary of £38,000–£60,000 depending on experience
  • Flexible working: 4-day week available
  • 6.6 weeks annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays)
  • £1,750 CPD allowance plus 1 week paid leave for CPD attendance
  • VDS, RCVS, BSAVA, and BVA membership fees paid by the practice
  • Staff pet discount scheme
  • Maternity, paternity, and adoption pay schemes
  • Optional private medical insurance and Healthshield coverage
