Full Time
Shared OOH
Join a thriving 22-strong RVN team at a multi-site practice with referral-level facilities, 24-hour emergency care, and a genuine commitment to nursing development. Flexible shifts, mentoring opportunities, and minimal OOH—this is where you'll grow.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Approximately 4 out-of-hours on-call shifts per year, shared fairly across the team. 1 weekend day in 4 with time off in lieu.

About the Role

Cromwell Vets is seeking an experienced Registered Veterinary Nurse to join its established small animal practice across Huntingdon. You’ll work flexible shifts (4×10 or 5×8 hours daily) between 7:30am and 9:30pm, with just one weekend day in four and approximately four on-call shifts annually shared fairly across the team. This is a full-time permanent position with genuine work-life balance—not the gruelling rotas you might expect elsewhere.

Based in Huntingdon, a well-connected market town surrounded by green space, you’ll have easy access to Cambridge and London while enjoying excellent schools and a strong community feel. The practice operates six sites across the area, but you’ll primarily work from the 24-hour main hospital—a state-of-the-art facility equipped to referral level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on nursing care across inpatient, theatre, client-facing consultation, and emergency & critical care (ECC) settings
  • Support a diverse and stimulating caseload including routine, emergency, and advanced surgical procedures
  • Mentor and support junior nursing staff and student veterinary nurses as a Clinical Coach or developing towards the role
  • Work flexibly across both the 24-hour hospital and branch practice sites
  • Contribute to high standards of patient care and clinical excellence within a collaborative team of 4 Lead Nurses, 22 RVNs, 4 SVNs, and 5 PCAs
  • Engage with rotated theatre, inpatient, clinic, and ECC duties—with clinic days available for nurses who enjoy consulting

Requirements

  • Small animal RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse qualification
  • Ideally 1+ year post-registration experience
  • Team player comfortable in a busy, varied caseload environment
  • Willingness to mentor colleagues and support junior staff
  • Passion for delivering excellent nursing care across all settings (clinic, inpatient, theatre, emergency)
  • Flexibility to work across multiple sites

Benefits

  • Salary from £28,000 pro-rata, dependent on experience
  • 5 weeks’ holiday allowance (inclusive of bank holidays)
  • Birthday day off
  • Paid RCVS and VDS professional fees
  • CPD allowance and extensive learning & development programmes
  • Clear induction and development plan from day one
  • Weekends worked on a rota with time off in lieu
  • Enhanced parental leave policy
  • Enhanced sickness policy
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Staff discount schemes and PetPlan discounts
  • Cycle2Work scheme
  • Eyecare vouchers
  • Gym membership discount
  • Flu vaccine voucher
  • Recruitment reward scheme
  • Buddy system for support and guidance
  • Mental health officers available
  • Progression opportunities within a supportive team culture

About the Practice

Cromwell Vets has been caring for Cambridgeshire’s pets for over 100 years. Operating across six well-established community sites, the practice has built a reputation for delivering the highest standard of patient care alongside genuine compassion for owners. The main hospital is a 24-hour emergency facility, supported by smaller branches, each with its own community identity but unified by shared clinical values.

The practice is equipped to referral level with ultrasound, endoscopy, orthopaedic facilities, laparoscopic spay equipment, and a full imaging suite—meaning nurses are constantly exposed to stimulating, varied casework. As part of Linnaeus (owned by Mars Veterinary Health), you’ll be part of a global network of over 70,000 veterinary professionals focused on improving the lives of 400 million pets, with access to extensive learning and career development opportunities.
