Head Veterinary Nurse – 12-month FTC

About the Role

Fivelands Veterinary Centre is seeking an experienced Head Registered Veterinary Nurse to lead its nursing team across three sites based in Moseley, a vibrant area near Birmingham city centre. This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term contract working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday with two late shifts (finishing 7:30pm) per week—and no out-of-hours requirements.

You’ll step into a senior clinical and leadership position at a friendly, well-established practice that punches above its weight. Fivelands holds ISFM Silver Cat Friendly accreditation, with vets qualified in Feline Medicine and Dentistry, plus access to referral-level abdominal and cardiac ultrasound. This varied caseload means you’ll be overseeing modern nursing care while building and mentoring a capable team.

The role blends hands-on clinical nursing with leadership responsibility: you’ll set nursing standards, champion clinical governance, manage rotas, and work closely with the practice leadership team to shape culture and performance across all sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide senior clinical and professional leadership to the nursing team across Fivelands’ three locations
• Lead, mentor, and develop nursing team members, building confidence and capability
• Manage nursing rotas and contribute to smooth day-to-day practice operations
• Set and maintain clinical nursing standards and oversee quality improvement activity
• Support surgical procedures, including anaesthesia monitoring and theatre nursing
• Deliver high-standard nursing care across a varied small animal caseload
• Support the wider practice leadership team in shaping ways of working and performance

Requirements

• RCVS Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with at least 3 years’ clinical experience
• Advanced medical and surgical nursing skills
• Proven experience leading, mentoring, and developing nursing teams
• Strong understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement, and professional standards
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills
• Confidence and knowledgeable approach to clinical practice
