Tired of the OOH grind? Heath Lodge offers a genuine 4-day week with no emergency cover—just Saturday mornings, 9am–1pm. Established since 1904, this independent St Albans practice values work-life balance as much as clinical excellence.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

About the Role

This is a permanent full-time veterinary surgeon position offering a refreshing approach to work-life balance. You’ll enjoy a 4-day week plus an extra Friday off after working a Saturday morning, with genuinely no out-of-hours responsibilities—just 1 in 3 Saturday mornings (9am–1pm, appointments only). Based in the heart of St Albans, a historic market town with excellent rail links to London, you’ll join a single-site small animal practice that’s been family-owned and operated since 1904.

Your days will rotate between consultations and surgery, giving you variety and the chance to maintain skills across all aspects of small animal practice. The team is collaborative and supportive; some staff have been here for over twenty years, and many clients even longer. This is a workplace where your voice genuinely matters and your development is actively encouraged.

With modern diagnostic equipment, in-house laboratory, digital X-ray, ultrasound, and multi-parameter anaesthetic monitoring at your fingertips, you’ll have the tools to deliver excellent clinical care without the pressure of a chaotic schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine small animal consultations and surgical procedures (spays, neuters, dentals, lump removals, and routine operations)
  • Maintain case continuity with clients and the practice team
  • Use and develop skills with available diagnostic equipment: digital X-ray, in-house laboratory, ultrasound, and anaesthetic monitoring
  • Participate in a collaborative team environment, sharing clinical ideas and best practice
  • Contribute to a professional, compassionate approach to client care
  • Work Saturday mornings on a 1 in 3 rota (9am–1pm, appointments only)

Requirements

  • Veterinary degree and RCVS registration (or eligible to register)
  • Competence and confidence with routine small animal procedures
  • Good client communication skills
  • Genuine desire to be a valued, collaborative team member

Benefits

  • Salary: £40,000–£60,000 depending on experience
  • Schedule: 4-day week plus extra Friday off after Saturday work
  • Out-of-hours: None (no night shifts or emergency cover)
  • Holiday: 5 weeks’ annual leave
  • Professional support: CPD funded and actively encouraged
  • Professional fees: RCVS and VDS paid
  • Pension: NEST pension scheme
  • Staff perks: Pet care discount for your own animals

About the Practice

Heath Lodge has been a fixture of St Albans veterinary care since 1904, originally serving working horses via the historic coach house (original doors still visible at the main entrance). The practice evolved through the 20th century under the leadership of Arthur Shenton and Tom Dean; Tom’s son Stephen remains Principal today. Until 2001, Heath Lodge was a mixed practice caring for farm and equine patients, but transitioned to dedicated small animal care (dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small pets) in response to changing local farming patterns. This family-owned, single-site practice is proud of staff longevity and client loyalty—a reflection of the values-driven approach to veterinary care.

The team prioritises professional, compassionate patient care and staff wellbeing. The practice is well-equipped with modern diagnostics and a friendly, supportive workplace culture where clinical interests are supported and professional development is encouraged.
