Senior Laboratory Technician

About the Role

Donnington Grove Veterinary Group in Newbury is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician to join their state-of-the-art multidisciplinary laboratory on a part-time basis. This role involves performing a variety of diagnostic tests and supporting the efficient day-to-day running of the laboratory. You'll work Tuesday to Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm, plus Saturday mornings from 8:00am to 12:00pm, with some Bank Holiday cover required during the equine season.

You'll gain hands-on experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), modern diagnostic technologies, and exposure to diverse laboratory disciplines including clinical chemistry, haematology, serology, microscopy, cytology, parasitology, microbiology and PCR. Your work will help deliver accurate and reliable diagnostic results that support veterinary professionals in providing exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine laboratory testing and investigations, including PCR, serology, biochemistry, immunoassays and result validation
• Manage the receipt, processing, storage and disposal of samples while maintaining quality control and turnaround times
• Maintain laboratory equipment, working areas, reagents and stock levels in line with SOPs and laboratory standards
• Identify, resolve and escalate technical, quality or maintenance issues appropriately to senior staff
• Support the wider laboratory function through workload prioritisation, client communication, training and other duties as required

Requirements

• Strong technical skills in clinical biochemistry, haematology, serology and PCR testing
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work independently, prioritise workload and meet deadlines
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively with colleagues at all levels
• Strong problem-solving abilities with a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and manual dexterity
• Previous experience working in a veterinary or medical diagnostic laboratory is advantageous
