Veterinary Ophthalmologist

About the Role

This is a referral ophthalmology position at Pride Veterinary Referrals in Derby, offering the chance to manage a varied and rewarding caseload while working closely with colleagues across a multidisciplinary hospital. The role is suited to an ECVO or ACVO Diplomate who wants to combine high-level clinical work with teaching, mentoring and service development.

The post covers both routine and complex ophthalmic cases, with opportunities to contribute to undergraduate teaching through the hospital’s link with the University of Nottingham, as well as clinical club discussions, case presentations and CPD delivery to referring veterinary professionals.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a referral ophthalmology caseload for patients, clients and referring veterinary surgeons.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the hospital on investigation and treatment plans.
• Support both routine and complex ophthalmic case management.
• Contribute to the development and growth of the ophthalmology service.
• Mentor, supervise and share knowledge with colleagues.
• Take part in undergraduate teaching through the University of Nottingham link where appropriate.
• Contribute to clinical club discussions, case presentations and CPD for referring veterinary professionals.

Requirements

• ECVO or ACVO Diplomate status.
• Advanced clinical expertise in medical and surgical ophthalmology.
• Strong communication skills for working with referring vets, clients and multidisciplinary teams.
• A collaborative approach to patient care within a referral hospital setting.
• An interest in teaching, mentoring and supporting the development of colleagues and veterinary students.
• Experience delivering CPD or contributing to veterinary education and development.

About the Practice

Pride Veterinary Referrals is a large, purpose-built multidisciplinary referral hospital in Derby and part of the Scarsdale Veterinary Group. The hospital provides specialist-led services in anaesthesia and analgesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, neurology, oncology and ophthalmology, alongside advanced practitioner-led cardiology and rehabilitation services.

Facilities include thirteen consultation rooms, seven hospital wards, five operating theatres, a dedicated cardiology suite, CT and MRI, interventional radiology, endoscopy, hydrotherapy and an in-house laboratory. The hospital also provides 24-hour inpatient care with dedicated night staff and experienced referral nurses, and it works closely with the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science.
