About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced Deputy Head Nurse to join our supportive team at a well-established small animal practice. This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, with flexible scheduling options: either four longer days or five shorter days. A 1:5 Saturday rota (8:00am-2:00pm) is part of the role, with time off in lieu compensation.

We’re equipped with advanced diagnostic and nursing equipment including multiparameter monitors, digital dental radiography, syringe drivers, and hot air warming devices. The Team

You’ll work alongside our supportive team of veterinary surgeons, 5 RVNs, 4 student veterinary nurses, and dedicated support staff. Our practice includes specialists in surgery, dentistry, imaging, and ophthalmology, plus visiting cardiologists and orthopaedic surgeons.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Head Nurse in managing the nursing team and day-to-day operations
  • Demonstrate excellence in all nursing duties including theatre practice, laboratory techniques, and anaesthesia support with meticulous attention to infection control
  • Safely dispense and manage pharmaceuticals in accordance with legislation, including accurate dosage calculations and comprehensive drug record-keeping
  • Oversee the efficient running of surgical procedures, preventing unnecessary delays
  • Collaborate closely with the Head Nurse, veterinary surgeons, and non-surgical teams in regular meetings
  • Ensure accurate patient record completion and adherence to care protocols across the nursing team
  • Provide mentoring and training to support team development, including CPD coordination
  • Act as a Clinical Coach, supporting student tutorial planning and training programmes
  • Conduct and support regular performance reviews and competency assessments
  • Uphold practice policies and manage any performance issues professionally

What We’re Looking For

  • Qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) or equivalent experience
  • Proven experience in nursing leadership or mentoring roles
  • Advanced knowledge of surgical nursing, theatre protocols, and infection control
  • Excellent communication and team management skills
  • Commitment to professional development and CPD
