Internal Medicine Intern

About the Role

This is a full-time, 1-year fixed-term internship in Small Animal Internal Medicine, commencing August 2026. Based at Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Basildon, you'll work five days per week with shared out-of-hours responsibilities under specialist supervision. The role combines daily clinical rounds, diagnostic investigations, patient management, and active participation in journal clubs and seminars within a truly multidisciplinary referral environment.

Located just 30 minutes by train from central London, Southfields offers easy access to the Essex countryside and excellent transport links, making it an ideal base for your internship year.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver daily patient care, perform consultations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments under the supervision of ECVIM-CA diplomates
• Participate in twice-daily service rounds and clinical investigations across the internal medicine service
• Contribute to shared out-of-hours cover managing in-patients and emergencies in small animal medicine and oncology
• Maintain excellent communication with referring veterinary surgeons and clients
• Present at and actively participate in journal clubs, rounds, and seminars
• Work collaboratively with a team of four Medicine Specialists, dedicated nursing staff including one VTS, and multidisciplinary specialists across Surgery, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesia, and Imaging

Requirements

• RCVS registration to practise in the United Kingdom
• Graduation from an EAVEE-approved institution
• Minimum one year in primary care practice (mandatory)
• Completion of a rotating internship or equivalent (desirable)
• Excellent command of conversational and medical English, both written and spoken
• Right to Work in the UK
• Strong interest in veterinary internal medicine
• Proactive approach, keen to develop knowledge and clinical skills
• Ability to work under supervision and independently as required
• Customer-oriented, professional, and caring approach
