About the Role

This is a rare opportunity to join Greenside Veterinary Practice, a close-knit mixed practice in the beautiful Scottish Borders village of St Boswells. The role offers a genuine balance between small animal and large animal work, with a 4-day working week and no routine weekend consulting (weekends on call are 1 in 8 with Friday after off). You'll be just 45 minutes from Edinburgh and 1 hour from Newcastle, combining rural lifestyle with city access and a lower cost of living.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide mixed practice veterinary care across small animal consulting and surgical work, with a strong on-call component for farm cases
• Manage a varied small animal caseload including consulting, general and advanced soft tissue surgery, dental work, and orthopaedic procedures
• Support the established farm client base, primarily beef and sheep with small amounts of dairy, goats, and occasional camelids (no equine work)
• Conduct fertility testing, field visits with pool car provision, and on-call farm emergency cover on a 1 in 7 rota (Monday-Thursday 7pm to 8.45am)
• Work across multiple sites when needed: Jedburgh and Hawick, both approximately 20 minutes away
• Collaborate with a proactive, experienced nursing team who actively support on-call work

Requirements

• Minimum 2 years post-qualification experience
• Excellent communication skills and personable manner
• Enthusiasm for both companion animal and large animal practice
• Willingness to undertake on-call duties and work across multiple sites
• RCVS registration as a veterinary surgeon

About the Practice

Greenside Veterinary Practice is an established mixed practice with a strong reputation across the Scottish Borders. The team includes experienced veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses, patient care assistants, and a dedicated front-of-house team who work closely together and genuinely enjoy spending time together both in and outside of work.

The small animal service is equipped with DR X-ray, new ultrasound machine, dental X-ray, bronchoscopy and gastroscopy equipment, and multiparameter monitoring. The practice has a growing orthopaedic caseload and regularly performs advanced soft tissue procedures in-house. The purpose-built large animal unit includes Easi-Scan ultrasound scanners, bull and tup fertility testing equipment, in-house hospitalisation with calf warmer, and Micron Agritech faecal egg count kit. Out-of-hours cover is supported by a dedicated on-call nurse.
