Join a thriving 14-vet independent practice with genuine clinical freedom, zero OOH nights, and a supportive team that invests in your development. Four-day weeks, complex cases, and no corporate targets—just great medicine.
No overnight on-call or night shifts. Vets Now covers all out-of-hours emergencies. One 7 pm finish every two weeks for telephone triage only (rare in-practice cases managed by local RVNs). Weekend rota: two Saturdays (8:30 am–4:30 pm) and two weekend shifts (Saturday 8:30 am–4:30 pm, Sunday 10 am–2 pm) within a 16-week cycle.
This is a full-time position working a four-day week (Monday–Thursday, 8:30 am–6:30 pm) with a fixed day off, based at the practice's main surgery in Droitwich's historic spa town. You'll join a 14-vet team at an independent, vet-owned practice that has been part of the local community for over 60 years. The practice offers genuine clinical freedom, no financial targets, and a culture where admin time is built into your day—you'll leave on time.
With a manageable weekend rota (two Saturdays and two weekend shifts every 16 weeks), no night-time on-call (Vets Now cover all OOHs), and only one rare 7 pm finish every two weeks for phone triage, work-life balance is a priority. You'll work alongside five certificate holders (in surgery, orthopaedics, medicine, dermatology, and exotics), visiting specialists including an RCVS Specialist in Cardiology and an ophthalmologist, and a supportive senior vet always available for backup.
The Malvern Hills are on your doorstep, with excellent transport links: two miles from the M5, 15 minutes to Worcester, and 20 minutes by train to Birmingham city centre. Droitwich offers a relaxed lifestyle with a sociable team culture—think kayaking and pub catchups alongside professional development.
MacArthur Barstow & Gibbs (MBG) has been established for over 60 years and remains one of the few independent, vet-owned practices in Worcestershire. Originally founded in 1954 to serve local farms, it has evolved into a thriving mixed practice with four purpose-built premises: the main small animal surgery in Droitwich (2004), a Worcester branch (1989), Wychbold clinic, and a separate farm and equine facility (moved 2020). The practice welcomes all species—small animals, exotics, horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, alpacas, goats, and chickens.
The small animal team comprises 14 vets (five with advanced certificates), 9 RVNs, 2 SVNs, and a dedicated support crew. The practice invests heavily in both equipment and staff development—recent purchases include an endoscope, second ultrasound machine, and dedicated orthopaedic theatre suite. Five visiting consultants and specialists (cardiology, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, and advanced surgical mentors) enhance in-house capabilities, reducing the need for external referrals. The practice's mission is to deliver veterinary care of the highest quality with compassion and consideration in a relaxed, friendly environment, with a commitment to fairly priced services and no unnecessary upselling.
