About the Role

You’ll join Pride Veterinary Referrals as a Veterinary Referral Clinician specialising in Anaesthesia, working within a dedicated specialist team that combines day-to-day clinical anaesthesia with multi-disciplinary collaboration across soft tissue surgery, orthopaedics, neurology, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging, and ophthalmology. This full-time permanent position includes participation in after-hours emergency cover alongside a dedicated night team, ensuring 24/7 hospital operations.

The anaesthesia department runs weekly tutorials and journal clubs, with the hospital hosting a weekly clinical club covering diverse specialist topics and offering frequent in-house CPD. You’ll be supported by experienced theatre nurses and work closely with colleagues in a strong collaborative culture. Derby’s location at the edge of the city centre offers excellent transport links to major UK cities and the beautiful Peak District for weekend escapes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert anaesthetic care for referral cases across multiple surgical disciplines
  • Support other departments with advanced analgesia and critical care management
  • Participate in after-hours emergency cover on a rostered basis
  • Contribute to the department’s weekly tutorials, journal clubs, and case discussions
  • Build strong working relationships across the 150-strong specialist referrals team
  • Help shape the future direction of anaesthetic services at the hospital
  • Support clinical training—the hospital hosts University of Nottingham veterinary students rotating through first opinion and referral services

Requirements

  • European or American College Diplomate in Anaesthesia (ECVAA or ACVAA) or residency-trained clinician
  • Significant experience working in a multi-disciplinary referral setting
  • Strong collaborative approach and ability to build relationships across disciplines
  • Demonstrable commitment to clinical excellence and continuous professional development

About the Practice

Pride Veterinary Referrals is a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary small animal referral hospital based in Derby, East Midlands, part of IVC Evidensia and serving as the specialist referral centre for the Scarsdale Veterinary Group (which operates 10 sites across the Midlands with over 300 staff). The hospital provides 24/7 emergency and specialist services across anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, neurology, and ophthalmology, with dedicated hydrotherapy and physiotherapy facilities.

The anaesthesia team comprises two ECVAA and ACVAA diplomates and two residency-trained clinicians, supported by experienced theatre nursing staff. Facilities include 13 consultation rooms, 7 hospital wards, 5 operating theatres, advanced imaging (CT and MRI), 3 ultrasound rooms, interventional radiology, endoscopy suite, hydrotherapy pool, treadmills, and dedicated chemotherapy area. The hospital works closely with the University of Nottingham and is located within easy reach of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, and Cheshire.
