Veterinary Surgeon

About the Role

This is a general practice opportunity in a growing, independent-minded small animal clinic. You'll work 30-40 hours per week with a manageable 1-in-4 weekend rota (sole charge on those Saturdays and Sundays only) and no overnight out-of-hours commitments, as emergency cover is provided by a local independent 24-hour hospital. The practice operates weekdays 08:30-19:30, Saturday 09:00-16:00, and Sunday 10:00-16:00.

The team is actively reshaping how they work, with a genuine commitment to maintaining healthy work-life balance and creating an environment where staff feel comfortable speaking up and contributing ideas. You won't be expected to take problems home at the end of the day.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality clinical care across general small animal caseload (dogs, cats, rabbits, small pets)
• Work collaboratively with an experienced vet team of four and a strong nursing staff to ensure clinical continuity and case management
• Focus on clinical decision-making and case work, while trusting your nursing team to utilise their full skill set, including Schedule 2 procedures and chargeable clinics
• Build trusting relationships with clients, supporting them in making the right decisions for their animals
• Contribute to a positive team culture by sharing ideas for clinical and operational improvements

Requirements

• RCVS registration as a veterinary surgeon (MRCVS)
• Genuine interest in working as part of a collaborative team
• Positive, methodical approach to case management and time prioritisation
• Respect for nursing knowledge and willingness to work collaboratively with a capable nursing team
• Strong client communication and relationship-building skills
• Understanding that balancing professional demands with personal wellbeing is essential

About the Practice

Vets for Pets opened in summer 2016 and has grown from zero to over 4,000 active clients. The practice is independent-minded and proud of its modern facilities, which include dental radiography and laparoscopy. The close-knit team comprises four vets, a practice manager, a head nurse with a dedicated nursing team including student nurses and veterinary care assistants, and a client care manager leading reception. The practice is known for its low staff turnover and positive work environment, with a strong nurse-to-vet ratio that allows nurses to run chargeable clinics and perform advanced procedures independently.
