Equine Veterinary Surgeon

Apply before: May 2, 2026

Up to £50,000/yr DOE
Congleton, North West
Full Time, Part Time
Shared OOH
Join a close-knit 9-vet equine practice in Cheshire where you'll have genuine work-life balance, clinical freedom, and a supportive team that actually finishes by 5pm. This is a rare opportunity to grow your equine skills alongside certificate holders in orthopaedics, dentistry, and lameness.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

1:6 rota (preferred); part-time arrangements open to discussion.

About the Role

Wright & Morten Veterinary Group is seeking an experienced equine veterinary surgeon to join their well-established Somerford Park Clinic team. This is a full-time position (part-time considered at minimum 3 days per week) with exceptional work-life balance: standard hours are 8:30am–5:30pm, with most routine work completed well before close. You’ll participate in a manageable 1:6 out-of-hours rota, with generous time off for weekend work (5 days for 2 weekends).

Based in rural Cheshire with a client base of leisure and sports horses, you’ll work across both ambulatory yard visits and clinic-based cases. The team includes multiple certificate holders in equine orthopaedics, equine dentistry, and equine lameness who are actively available to support your case work. The clinic is equipped for inpatient care, elective surgery, in-house laboratory work, and comprehensive diagnostics—plus an exceptional nursing team that assists both in clinic and on yard.

This vacancy has arisen because a long-serving vet (who joined as a new graduate in 2018) is moving to a referral hospital role, so you’d be joining a genuinely stable, supportive environment where retention is high and people matter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and ambulatory emergency care for equine clients across the Cheshire area
  • Manage clinic-based cases including inpatient care, elective surgery, and diagnostic work
  • Collaborate with the team’s specialist certificate holders on complex cases and case development
  • Participate in the 1:6 out-of-hours rota (preferred but open to discussion)
  • Work alongside the in-house nursing team for clinical support and yard-based procedures
  • Utilise the full range of diagnostic kit available for ambulatory and clinic use

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ post-qualification experience as a veterinary surgeon
  • Confident and competent with routine and ambulatory emergency equine work
  • Interest in equine medicine (desirable but not essential)
  • Willingness to participate in out-of-hours rota on a 1:6 basis (preferred; part-time arrangements also considered)

Benefits

  • Time Off: 6.6 weeks annual leave inclusive of bank holidays (pro rata), plus additional holiday for your birthday and generous time off for weekend work (5 days for 2 weekends)
  • Professional Development: £1,250 annual CPD allowance with 40 hours paid CPD leave (pro rata); certificate support; access to IVC Evidensia Academy learning and development; Vetlexicon online encyclopaedia; research funding eligibility; £1,250 per annum care fund allowance
  • Health & Wellbeing: Private medical insurance; 24/7 employee assistance programme; enhanced family-friendly policies (maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental, surrogacy pay); wellbeing initiatives
  • Professional Memberships: BVA membership, VDS cover, and RCVS fees covered
  • Pension & Schemes: Company pension scheme with IVC Evidensia contribution; cycle to work scheme; green cars scheme (subject to eligibility)
  • Colleague Perks: Discounted treatment for your own pets at IVC Evidensia practices; discounts and cashback via hundreds of participating retailers; voluntary benefits to suit your needs
  • Clinical Support: Access to multiple certificate holders in equine orthopaedics, equine dentistry, and equine lameness; full diagnostic kit; exceptional nursing team support
