OOH Veterinary Surgeon

About the Role

This is a full-time or part-time OOH veterinary surgeon role based at West Mounts Veterinary Hospital in Halifax, with shift times between 7pm and 9pm. The practice is seeking someone who enjoys emergency and out-of-hours cases, feels confident working sole charge, and values collaboration within a supportive team. The role offers clinical freedom to make decisions in the best interests of patients while benefiting from the guidance of experienced colleagues.

You will work with a varied medical and surgical caseload in a purpose-built facility equipped with three consulting rooms and a fully equipped operating theatre. The practice works closely with Halifax hospital's own out-of-hours service, ensuring this position remains focused on first-opinion veterinary care with no routine out-of-hours commitment beyond the scheduled shift pattern, maintaining an excellent balance between delivering exceptional clinical care and preserving work-life balance.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide first-opinion out-of-hours veterinary care during evening shift times
• Manage a varied caseload of medical and surgical cases with clinical confidence
• Carry out diagnostic investigations with precision and competence
• Work as a sole charge veterinary surgeon when required
• Build strong relationships with clients and create positive, reassuring experiences
• Support and mentor colleagues, contributing to clinical standards and team development
• Offer guidance to wider team members and help foster a collaborative clinical environment

Requirements

• Registered veterinary surgeon (MRCVS)
• Comfortable and confident in sole charge work
• Strong clinical skills and ability to manage a varied caseload independently
• Excellent client care skills with ability to build trust and lasting relationships
• Team player with natural mentoring instincts
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and clinical learning
• Interest in mentoring or leadership roles welcomed but not essential
