Equine Stud Veterinary Surgeon

About the Role

This seasonal Equine Stud Veterinary Surgeon role runs from January 2027 to July 2027 and offers a varied mix of stud medicine, ambulatory work and hospital-based cases. You will be joining Fyrnwy Equine Hospital, a well-established practice with a Tier 3 equine hospital and an ambulatory branch serving Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales.

The caseload includes Thoroughbred and Sports Horse studs, stallion centres and some individual breeders. The role also includes embryo flushing and barren mare work up, with opportunities to develop your own areas of interest and follow through your own cases.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out routine stud medicine across Thoroughbred and Sports Horse populations.
• Perform embryo flushing and barren mare work ups.
• Provide first opinion ambulatory cover, including routine calls and emergencies.
• Take part in the out of hours rota on an equal share basis, currently 1 in 7.
• Work each week night with a second vet on call and contribute to a separate stud rota for weekends.
• Work with hospital colleagues on case work ups and ongoing case follow up.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with studs and clients.

Requirements

• A veterinary degree and RCVS registration, or eligibility to register.
• Experience in clinical practice with growing confidence in routine medical and surgical cases.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships.
• A proactive approach to learning and development.
• Professionalism, reliability and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Enthusiasm for delivering high quality patient and client care.

About the Practice

Fyrnwy Equine Hospital is a specialist equine practice with a long-established background in horse care. It was established in 1978 as Bron Fyrnwy Equine Clinic, and from January 2003 it has been based at a purpose-built site in Baschurch, Shrewsbury.

The practice combines an ambulatory equine service with a fully equipped surgical facility. The team includes European boarded specialists in surgery and medicine, three equine nurses, one student vet nurse and 11 support staff members, and it manages a mix of National Hunt Thoroughbred studs, sports horse clients and individual breeders.
