Emergency Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon

About the Role

This is an Emergency Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon position at Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital, working on a 4 on, 4 off rota. Shift times vary across days, nights and twilight shifts, and you will also commit to a minimum of 4 bank holidays per year plus 2 weekends per month.

You will join a large, multi-disciplinary, specialist-led referral hospital with a welcoming and knowledgeable team. The role includes consulting, caring for inpatients, and supporting local clinics through out-of-hours services, alongside an ECC vet.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide out-of-hours emergency veterinary care as part of the OOH team.
• Consult and care for inpatients alongside the ECC vet.
• Support local clinics through the hospital’s emergency service.
• Work collaboratively with the wider practice team to deliver patient and client care.
• Contribute to the clinical culture and share knowledge with colleagues.

Requirements

• Veterinary degree and RCVS registration, or eligibility to register.
• Experience working in out-of-hours with growing confidence in emergency cases.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to build effective relationships with clients and colleagues.
• Proactive approach to learning and openness to feedback.
• Professional, reliable, and able to work independently and collaboratively.

About the Practice

Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital is a large-scale, multi-disciplinary, specialist-led referral hospital and part of Inspiring Vet Care. The hospital is one of the largest in the UK at over 36,000 sq ft and has the capacity to treat up to 10,000 pets per year.

The hospital provides specialist-led multi-discipline veterinary referrals and an emergency service from its site in Longbridge, Birmingham. It is home to recognised specialists across Internal Medicine, Oncology, Cardiology, Diagnostic Imaging, Neurology, Orthopaedics, Soft Tissue and Anaesthesia. The practice treats dogs, cats and small pets, and has easy access from the A38 through Longbridge as part of the West Longbridge regeneration project.
