About the Role
Join a well-established multi-site small animal practice in Gloucestershire as Clinical Nursing Manager. You'll lead around 10 registered and student nurses across multiple branches, with your primary base at the Abbeydale site. This full-time role combines hands-on clinical nursing with strategic team leadership and works on a manageable 1:6 weekend rota with no out-of-hours shifts. The practice has been trusted by the local community for over 25 years and offers excellent access to both city and Cotswolds countryside.
Your week splits between clinical work (80%) and dedicated non-clinical management time (20%), giving you genuine space to mentor your team, plan training, manage rotas, and contribute to practice governance. You'll work closely with six vets and a broader practice team, collaborating on everything from surgical planning to staff development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the nursing team, ensuring efficient running of all surgical areas and maintaining high clinical standards across all sites
- Deliver strategic and operational nursing leadership while providing a nursing voice at senior practice level
- Ensure effective patient care management from a nursing perspective, maintaining practice and group policies at all times
- Manage theatre practice, lab techniques, drug dispensing and pharmaceutical management in line with legislation
- Supervise anaesthesia assistance and infection control protocols
- Lead regular performance reviews, mentoring and CPD planning for all nursing staff
- Coordinate rota management, holiday scheduling and CPD requests across multiple sites, including ad hoc shift changes
- Plan and deliver in-house staff training, working with Clinical Coaches on student tutorials
- Monitor daily planners to optimise staff deployment during busy and quiet periods
- Manage overtime requests and critical incident reporting as part of clinical governance
- Support practice marketing initiatives and social events
- Travel to other branches as needed for team support, training and clinical continuity
Requirements
- Current RVN registration with the RCVS
- Prior nursing management or team leadership experience preferred but not essential if you have strong RVN experience
- Excellent knowledge of surgical nursing, theatre protocols and anaesthesia support
- Ability to calculate drug doses and manage pharmaceutical records safely
- Strong communication and mentoring skills with understanding of different learning styles
- Competence in staff motivation, performance management and team development
- Willingness to travel between practice branches
