Ready to be the heart of a friendly small animal practice with a real community feel? McKenzie Vets in Alexandria is looking for a welcoming receptionist to join their tight-knit team on a part-time basis—working 15 hours per week with no out-of-hours pressure.

About the Role

You’ll be the first friendly face clients and their pets encounter at McKenzie Vets, a small animal practice that’s been serving Alexandria since 1955. This is a part-time position working 15 hours per week on a fixed-term contract (12 months), giving you genuine work-life balance while making a real difference in a practice that genuinely cares about its clients and animals.

The practice operates on Fear Free principles, meaning most patients arrive happy and relaxed—and you’ll help maintain that welcoming atmosphere from the moment they walk through the door. You’ll work alongside a supportive team in a 100% small animal setting, though you might occasionally handle enquiries about more unusual patients, including exotic animals and even visits from Loch Lomond Sea Life Centre.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greeting clients and their pets in a friendly, professional manner that sets the tone for their visit
  • Managing the appointment system and scheduling to keep the practice running smoothly
  • Handling client enquiries with care and attention to detail
  • Processing payments and managing daily banking
  • Supporting communications between clients and the clinical team
  • Maintaining stock control and managing routine queries
  • Multitasking effectively in a busy environment while maintaining your welcoming approach

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills and a naturally professional, welcoming manner
  • Experience in a customer-facing role, with a strong focus on service and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively under pressure
  • A collaborative team player who enjoys supporting colleagues
  • Proactive attitude with openness to feedback and continuous learning
  • Organised approach to daily tasks and client interactions

Benefits

  • 6.6 weeks’ annual leave (based on FTE), plus an additional day added for your birthday
  • Increasing annual leave the longer you stay with the practice
  • Enhanced family-friendly policies including maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental and surrogacy pay
  • Healthcare Cash Plan
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Access to learning and development through the IVC Evidensia Academy
  • Pension scheme
  • Discounted staff pet care
  • Voluntary benefits—choose from a range of perks to suit your lifestyle
  • Discounts and cashback with hundreds of participating retailers

About the Practice

McKenzie Vets has been a cornerstone of Alexandria since 1955, built on values of hard work, excellent reputation, and genuine client loyalty. The practice is 100% small animal focused, treating dogs, cats, small pets, and exotics including rabbits and chickens. As part of IVC Evidensia—the UK and Europe’s leading veterinary care group comprising over 900 practices and referral hospitals—McKenzie Vets benefits from significant resources while maintaining its local community roots and personal touch.

The team operates under Fear Free principles, creating a calm, welcoming environment where nervous animals feel safe and confident.
