Coastal Yorkshire practice with genuine work-life balance, a supportive team, and yes, a beach hut. Looking for a small animal vet ready to grow your skills with mentorship built in.
1:4 weekend rota covering small animals only. Saturday morning consults (9 am to 1 pm) and one weeknight on-call. Less experienced vets have second-on-call support from Libby or Simon.
The Beck Veterinary Practice is seeking a small animal veterinary surgeon to join their independent, family-run team in beautiful coastal Whitby. The practice's small animal caseload has grown to approximately 85% of their workload, and they're now looking for an experienced vet to concentrate on this area. This is a permanent full-time position working a 4-day week (8.30 am to 6.30 pm) with a guaranteed day off each week.
You'll enjoy a manageable 1:4 weekend rota covering just small animals, with Saturday morning consults (9 am to 1 pm) and one weeknight on-call. If you're less experienced, Libby or Simon will be on second call to support you with cases, advice, and an extra pair of hands. The consults finish at 5.30 pm, giving you proper time to leave on time and enjoy Whitby's independent restaurants, pubs, and cafes. You'll also have access to the practice beach hut, stocked with paddleboards and wine.
The practice also works closely with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue to treat marine wildlife and has strong connections with the local wildlife sanctuary, adding variety to your clinical experience.
The Beck Veterinary Practice has been family-run since 1946, now in its third generation of Beck vets. Established in 1946 by Jimmy Beck, the practice moved to its current purpose-built location in Whitby in 1997, with a branch surgery in Loftus opening shortly after. Current owner Simon Beck joined his father's practice in 1983, and his daughter Libby (Elizabeth) became clinical director after graduating from Nottingham in 2012. The practice remains true to its founding values of high-quality care backed by sound clinical judgement.
The main Whitby practice is purpose-built with three consulting rooms, separate dog and cat wards, isolation facilities, laboratory, pharmacy, digital and dental X-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, and multi-parameter monitoring. The team is experienced in treating dogs, cats, rabbits, small furry pets, birds, reptiles, equine, farm animals, and occasional wildlife. Libby is known for her enthusiasm for surgery and mentoring, while owner Simon has particular interests in dermatology, orthopaedics, and pig medicine.
