About the Role

You’ll join Vets Now’s highly skilled emergency team in Portsmouth, working every Friday night from 19:00 to 08:30. This dedicated out-of-hours position offers the perfect balance for nurses keen to deepen their emergency and critical care knowledge whilst maintaining flexibility—whether you’re looking for additional income, balancing family commitments, or building specialist experience. The role is part of Vets Now’s 60+ UK clinics and two 24/7 pet emergency hospitals, giving you exposure to a diverse caseload across the night shift.

As part of an established emergency service, you’ll be at the heart of clinical treatment. The nursing team here drives first aid assessment, critical care monitoring, diagnostics, and post-operative care. You’ll work in a collaborative, supportive environment where your clinical judgment is valued and your development actively encouraged.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver first aid advice and triage both over the phone and in clinic
  • Manage critical care patients: monitor major body systems, track in-patient trends, identify clinical changes quickly, and deliver physiotherapy and pain assessment
  • Perform wound and dressing care with attention to detail
  • Conduct basic diagnostic procedures confidently in a sole charge capacity
  • Contribute to maintaining the clinic’s high clinical standards during night shifts

Requirements

  • RCVS registered for a minimum of six months
  • Genuine commitment to high clinical standards and animal welfare
  • Compassion for clients and their pets
  • Experience with emergency or critical care caseloads is advantageous but not essential

Benefits

  • Salary & Flexibility: Up to £19 per hour (depending on experience). Work as little as two shifts per month or scale up as needed
  • Professional Development: £1,125 annual CPD allowance plus 20 paid CPD hours (pro rata); RCVS fees paid; support for our industry-recognised ECC certificate
  • Wellbeing: Private medical insurance; enhanced sick and maternity pay; 7 weeks pro rata annual leave; birthday as a paid day off
  • Financial Security: UK Standard Pension contributions (5% employee / 3% employer); death in service benefit of two times annual salary
  • Lifestyle Perks: Up to 50% discounted staff pet care; Reward Gateway discounts and cashback with hundreds of retailers
